Re: Do You Think Space Mountain Will Ever Go BACKWARDS?

Why would you want it to go backwards? Every space movie I have seen you go forwards.

If it is just for the thrill there is a nice park dedicated just for that. It's called Magic Mountain.

Re: Do You Think Space Mountain Will Ever Go BACKWARDS?

I don't think Space Mountain will ever change in such a dramatic way.

I think Disney would have to build a brand-new coaster that would be designed with this in mind. I do think that if there is ever a new, major coaster built in DLR, it would benefit from being uncommonly designed.

Loops are pretty lame, a corkscrew is what it needs! That would be more like space travel anyway.

So if a reverse portion was added to another coaster, it would be accidental?

One of the old moderators of MC way back in the day told me that Space Mountain goes backwards on Grad Night. I am glad he was honest.

I like loops, thank you. But wait...how would a corkscrew be like space travel? When was the last time a maneuver like that was performed in space, and moreover, what would be the point of doing that in space?

Space Mountain isn't like a ride through space. It just isn't. It's an AMAZING ride that I will always love, and it's reminiscent of space. But it ain't like space travel, in real life or in theory.

    I like the corkscrew idea!

I'll tell you what, having space mountain go backwards would be an amazing "seasonal" feature that you could advertise the crap out of. Heck that is one seasonal type of change I would look forward to, of course we would need to test how it would work and how fun that ride adapts to going backwards.

Personally while it would be cool to go backwards on Space Mtn, I would much rather see focus be put on adding more to Tomorrowland.

There is a reason that Indiana Jones et le Temple du Péril no longer has the subtitle "à l'envers".

Re: Do You Think Space Mountain Will Ever Go BACKWARDS?

One of the problems with doing this would be the lift hills. What would that look like? You'd be facing downwards, kept in your seat by new harnesses, looking at where you came from, with some sort of new special effect. Gone would be that first view of the tower. When you emerged into "space" at the top of the second lift, you wouldn't be confronted by the vast, beautiful cosmic vista, but by a jarring and disappointing look at the mouth of lift tunnel, with its black sides and obviously mechanical nature.

It'd be a fun ride for a blind person. Not for one with sight.

That's what I meant above by "I'm not sure if it would add to the show. It's designed to be looked at frontwards."
I think backward facing is more for outdoor coasters.

So why not change the topic of this thread to "Do You Think Gadget's GoCoaster Will Ever Go BACKWARDS?"
    Disney FAQ#275: What is DCA?
DCA stands for Disney Construction Area. All the Cast Members are themed with hard hats and steel toed boots.

Re: Do You Think Space Mountain Will Ever Go BACKWARDS?

Actually, my friend once claimed that she got on Big Thunder in the morning and it went backwards! The train was backwards, by the way, not backwards like going the wrong way on the track. She said that when she came back to the station the cast member basically said, "Oh, sorry, I forgot to flip the train around."

I really like to trust my friends, but is this even possible?

And about Space Mountain going backwards (I hate to stray away from the subject), I certainly hope it never does, just like I was happy that the rumors about it having a loop when it would reopen while it was closed for two years were just rumors.

Re: Do You Think Space Mountain Will Ever Go BACKWARDS?

All coasters can go backwards. But you would have to change the breaks under the trains so it would work. With Disney coasters the show is in front of you why would not want to see the show?
