    I hate that railing too!!!

I think they were added, and still there, for safety reasons.
I just noticed the "D" right there in the middle of the railing.

If we're still voting I want to show my support for the railings. I think they look beautiful.

    Carry on...

It isn't the proper ornamentation. Just as cubist ornamentation would have no place on Victorian Main Street, USA.

What this railing shows is that people in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s were smarter than those of the 21st century.

In thinking about it, I think it would be safe to say that the whole castle doesn't fit the ornamentation of the environment. Why at the end of Main Street?

Generally, Disney’s success has been based on providing exceptional quality and attention to detail that was far and away above what those who “don’t see the problem” are aware of. And those attractions and other ventures that haven’t been as successful often are due to the company’s assertion that as long as they provide enough for those who “don’t see the problem”, the Disney name will be enough to guarantee success.

So, acknowledging those things that deteriorate the overall quality, that the company has often used instead of actual quality and detail, will hopefully help encourage Disney to keep their historic levels up.

I don't like the railing in the least. It is IMO it throws the castle's scale completely out the window. Any of the latter add-ons seriously screw with the forced perspective of the DL architecture. The castle and Main Street USA leaps to mind. TAKE IT DOWN!

Clearly, the castle walls in the front only go up to the performers knees. They are not higher then the railings as on the Mark Twain. That is a safety hazard for anybody who goes up there.

The floor behind the parapet walls is around 3ft lower than the top of the walls. And there are lighting fixtures and cables that run along the wall that also keep people away. The people in your picture are probably on some sort of riser to elevate them to allow for a better view. If safety was a concern, they probably had safety cables securing them.

So, there is no SAFETY reason for that railing.
