OMG! The Disney Afternoon Avenue!! I LOVED that so much! It was so cool getting to meet all my favorite characters (Kit from Tale Spin, specifically) and climbing around in a big wedge of cheese! Duuuuude... if only you could've been there.

Ooh! I just remembered I have pictures laying around here somewhere... let me look for them (and these are different from the others I posted here).

And, you went DL from the very beginning, didn't you? How lucky and what a wonderful place to go. I recall long ago, you talked of going on weekend nights to hear bands playing, and family gathering there as an outing. It all sounded so amazing to me when I read about it.

Re: What was happening at Disneyland when you were born?

I was born in 1956, which puts me in group of the still young and "young at heart" with our Disneyland experiences.

A lot of things happened during the park's first full year of operation. Rather than "cut and paste" I'll just give you a few highlights...

According to "Disneyland...50 Years of Souvenirs"...among other things, the Skyway opened and first "Fantasy In The Sky" fireworks were seen. The Omnibus made its debut, going past newly installed electric lights on Main Street.

Tom Sawyer's Island and the Indian Village both opened that year. (I remember being scared by the indians on my first visit circa 1960 or '61.)

My personal favorite...the opening of "The Bathroom of Tomorrow". Especially since Disneyland's bathrooms of today have step-by-step instructions on how to wash one's hands.

They sold their first souvenir pictorial that year, and the five millionth guest entered the park during the year I was born.

    http://users.sisna.com/matkinson/Pages/1956.html

And churros and glow in the dark necklaces were not even a twinkle in the ODV eye...
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

    !961-

    First all night Grad Party

    Tinker Bell's First flight

25th Millionth guest, Dr. Glenn Franklin

    Flying Saucers open

And looking back through the thread I heart Disneyland put a far better effort into the year than I did, good work.
