New Steve Martin book includes chapter on Disneyland

I just finished reading Steve Martin's new autobiography called, Born Standing Up.
The book includes a whole chapter on DL when Martin worked in the park. He includes lots of interesting info like who was running the magic shop. I found it intresting. check it out!

well, it IS a lengthy chapter-- but begins with Martin getting a job at the age of 10 selling guidebooks. He details his time at the park by talking of Wally Boag and the Golden Horseshoe. I found it interesting how much he attributes his comedy act in the 70s to Wally Boag. He also talks about the various magicians he work for at the Merlin's Magic shop. It is an interesting read.

Just started reading it yesterday. So far it has been interesting, but I haven't got to the Disneyland part yet. I was hoping it would contain info about that part of his and now I more interested in finishing it now that I know that it does. Thanks.

My two sisters have read that book and both say it's excellent. I'm looking forward to reading it myself.

I got to get the book myself. He was my favorite comedian in 1979.

I think he also worked at Knott's for awhile. I think he did some acting jobs at the Birdcage Theatre. Does it talk about that?

That's correct, and he does talk about it in the book (though I haven't read it).

You need more proof, or you just can't wrap your head around the idea?

I just ordered this book from Amazon! I can't wait to read it. On Amazon they have a deleted passage from the book about returning to DL. It is very cool.

Yes-- there is a whole chapter on the Birdcage as well. As a young child, my father took us to Knott's like every weekend. We'd always go to the birdcage as it was one of my favorite things. I loved (even as a 7 year-old) seeing the glossy head shots of the famous people who'd played there on stage. The Birdcage was closed down on my last trip to Knotts.

The passages are actually posted right on Amazon.com. Here is the one about DL:

    On Returning to Disneyland
Ten years later, after the Beatles, drugs, and Vietnam had changed the entire tenor of American life, I returned to the magic shop at Disneyland and stood as a stranger. As I looked around the eerily familiar room another first came over me, a previously unknown emotion, one that was to have a curious force over me for the rest my life: the longing tug of nostalgia. Looking at the counter where I pitched Svengali Decks and the Incredible Shrinking Die, I was awash with the recollection of indelible nights where the sky was blown open by fireworks and big band sounds drifted through trees strung with fairy lights. I remembered my youth, when every moment was crisply present, when heartbreak and joy replaced each other quickly, fully and without trauma. Even now when I visit Disneyland, I am steeped in melancholy, because a corporation has preserved my nostalgia impeccably. Every nail and screw is the same, and Disneyland looks as new now as it did then. The paint is fresh, and the only wear allowed is faux. In fact, only I have changed. In the dream-like world of childhood memories, so often vague and imprecise, Disneyland remains for me not only vivid in memory, but vivid in fact.

I bought this book for my son for Christmas. I am a Steve Martin fan from WAY back (1970's....King Tut days) and my son grew up liking him too. I need to buy a copy for myself. I think he's so smart and so entertaining.
