    Old Time, Big Headed Characters

Is there any reasonable explanation as to why some of the characters heads were so big back in Walt's day?
It doesn't seem like they were all like that...for example in this photo the white rabbit looks normal while the mad hatter's head is huge.
There had to have been some reason for it, because they just looked ridiculous.

I was wondering about this myself recently, after looking at the vintage footage on the Disneyland Secrets DVD. I remember in the 80s that Pooh was a bighead with a pot of Hunny balanced on his noggin, the Dwarves were all bigheads with nonfunctional arms (giving a humorous punchline to the story of the new choreographer who told them to pick up ribbons and wave them around), and the Mad Hatter was as pictured.

I can understand the Dwarves as it made the average-sized cast member appear shorter than Snow White. Mad Hatter is now a face character, and Pooh no longer balances his Hunny jar.

But beyond that, what are the criteria for face and rubber head characters? At first I thought all villains were rubber heads (Queen of Hearts, Captain Hook, etc) but Cruella, the Wicked Stepmother, and the Wicked Queen are all face characters. And as noted, the Hatter made the jump from rubber head to face character within the last 10 years or so.

Is there any logic behind this at all?

While I was watching Disneyland Secrets DVD the Disneyland USA show I thought it was odd to hear Tony B. say that they could not use the characters out in the park. He did say they could use characters that did not market well in the park.

The Disneyland 'Opening Day Mickey' costume was just horrendous. Good thing that only lasted a day.
