Re: New Disneyland Dream Suite signage - What do you Think?

Think of it as this.

The apartment was rendered after the original designs of WD's apartment and brought up to par with the 21st century that’s a plus! Also they are completely renovating the building and surrounding area, which was needed and probably never would of happened if this idea was not put into play. Yes there are other areas that need love too but I think this idea is a great, and when the Year of a Million Dreams is over you will be able to stay in that room for a price.

Sadly the Disney gallery was temporarily closed but it will reopen and this is a good thing!

Re: New Disneyland Dream Suite signage - What do you Think?

I don't find this Castle logo:

To be any more offensive than this Castle logo:

Honestly, I like the design of the signs on the stairs - but the one over the door is a little much.

I think the most offensive thing of this entire Dream Suite is that Disney is exploiting Walt Disney any chance they get with it. ---

The goldenized initials.

Using Walt's photo in marketing materials.

And spewing Walt's name in podcasts and in press releases ....

Exploiting Walt is all just a tasteless way of justifying this Dream Suite with providing no explanation as to why the Disney Gallery has been removed during its 20th Anniversary, without having a proper place to relocate to quickly.

Thank you for posting that!

Not a lot of people knew about those initials and pointing it out to someone and then explaining why they are there lent to the validity that this area was really going to be Walt's Apartment. I can't really explain it. It looks nice but IMO a bit gaudy and unnecessary to be painted in gold. And if you see how the whorls of the lettering blend in with the rest of the iron work it is easy to tell that it was meant to be hidden. Otherwise the letters would have been wrought with rough angles to make it stand out more.

PRESSLER!
Before you blame Pressler for that silhouette castle logo, you may be interested to know that that castle logo is the original Disneyland logo that was used even before the Park opened in 1955...up until the current Disney Parks All-Parks generic one.

And I was certainly never aware that "people hate when Disney uses a silhouette rather than an image." In my experience, most folks loved the old vintage Disneyland castle silhouette! And many still do!

Which BTW, you can still find on many items, signs, and vehicles backstage.

I think the issue is more that they decided to use a castle silhouette, but decided not to use the Disneyland logo.

The castle on the old Disneyland sign, which not a depiction of Sleeping Beauty's Castle, is only found on that sign and was specially designed for Disneyland.

The castle silhouette is certainly trivial in the grand scheme of things, but it represents the attention that is being paid by the execs, and is a bit of a measure of their respect for each park's individual identity.
I don't know if you've been to Florida/Paris/etc. etc., but unless we're talking about Hong Kong, that castle silhouette is unique to Disneyland. Yes, the YOMD branding has SBC as the blue-and-gray logo nationwide, but the castle as-displayed on the gallery's sign is clearly reminiscent of the classic Disneyland marketing team, not the YOMD campaign. If this was Florida and there was a SBC logo, or if even Anaheim had a Cinderella Castle logo, I'd absolutely understand the connection, but it seems to me that TDA's branding group had no intention to slap the castle-in-clouds logo on this sign.

GASP, RASULO IS AT IT AGAIN!

It is unique to Disneyland, it is the same style that's been used since before the Tencennial, and the only reason people are freaking out here is because they're connecting it with the Dreams campaign. Frankly, I don't understand why the posters here have so much affection for the gallery and steps in the first place - that entire section of the park was butchered for the sake of the gallery and traffic control in the late 80's/early 90's. The Pirates queue used to be on flat land, those stairs in front of the (Detailed-and-now-covered) building were put in for gallery access, and the bridge over the now-sunken Pirates queue ruins "Walt's intended vision" for the area. If people are going to be complaining about the area being destroyed, why didn't they start in the 80's when the Pirates building was "desecrated" with a stairway?

Sorry, I was being sarcastic, I guess I wasn't clear enough. I am well aware that the 1989-1998 Disneyland sign is not from the Pressler-era, I was just trying to point out that the same basic logo was used on one of the most beloved icons by Disney fans.

You mean like the Club 33 sign?
As others have pointed out....NO. I can't begin to voice how wrong that comparison is. The Club 33 sign is secluded, inconspicuous, mysterious, and it doesn't draw attention to itself. The DreamSuite sign is in a spot where nearly EVERY PARK GUEST will walk, with bright coloration, and an explicit label. It shouts "Hey, look over here!" while the Club 33 sign is a mere marker--a sign so those in the know can make sure they're going in the right door.

Walt's original artistic vision isn't worth anything if it's bad for traffic flow--and he knew that. The line for Pirates was ruining that area, making it impossible for people to get through. Now it's only bad during Fantasmic!--and not as bad as it would have been. Personally, I find the old entrance to be rather plain, rather uninteresting. The "new" setup allows more people to fit in a small space without feeling crowded and without blocking traffic, and you can still see the facade of the building just fine.

100% agreed. I thought what they did was very appropriate. My point is that this sign-nitpicking is absurd - I think it looks fine, and there's really no better way to have done this. Why build a suite like that for a contest and not get people excited about it? Isn't that what Al Lutz always says Disney should do, get guests more excited about the campaign?

My point through my previous post is that if you really want to nitpick, it seems like the balcony and that whole area is a much easier target, and made the NOS aesthetics much worse than this likely-to-be-completely-ignored sign.

The campaign is right - it was Walt Disney's original suite. Sounds a lot better than a boring gallery from the 80's that nobody but Disney Fans went to, who ended up looking at the same stuff they'd looked at online 100 times before. Either way, nobody really went up to that area, and I'll bet this "mysterious" new suite garners much more guest excitement than the old gallery. Heck, they might even give tours during the day.

I really like this sign, they were respectful of the
original design, and the new design is less dated
than the blocks of letters that had a definite
1950's look. I also like the colors of this sign, and
the changing sign was great for park info in
a prominent place ~ DLR could certainly benefit
from this type of sign again ~ instead we have
those semipermanent movable light up signs that
constantly declare "Disneyland Sold Out ~
DCA available"

As for the "Dream Suite" sign, it makes me want to
BARF! It only serves as a reminder that what used
to be available to the public, and enjoyed by thousands,
with it's peaceful setting, in the midst of a constantly
full park ~ and the history for us Disney Geeks made it
even more special to visit, is now just a hotel room for
a sweepstakes that doesn't have a reason to exist. They
aren't even pretending to be celebrating some anniversary.
I'm surprise JR isn't using the Dream Suite at DL to
Celebrate EPCOT's 25th Anniversary ~ that's the type of
logic that we have come to expect from his insipid imagination.

That sign only gathers animocity towards the current
management, for taking away a premier shop and attraction,
WITHOUT giving the public ANYTHING in return. The closure
of the Disney Gallery at this location will live in infamy and
remain a constant reminder of the inept management of
Jay Rasulo and his lack of respect for Disneyland and more
importantly his lack of respect for DL's Guests!

Re: New Disneyland Dream Suite signage - What do you Think?

These are from this afternoon (1/24/08):

The tarps are down and the railing is showing again. I like the gold letters on the balcony.

Here's the new larger sign over the entrance...

And the stairs look like they are completed...

Is it going to open tomorrow?
