Great TR!! I like your narratives.

Love your trip report and thanks for the Death Valley pics. My friend and I drove through Death Valley in one day last year. It is such a huge park, we were driving most of the day and yet we saw different things than you. I enjoyed seeing your pics of the stuff that we missed. I would have liked to have gone to Scotty's Castle (am I wrong, isn't that what's on the cover of the Eagles "Hotel of California" album?) but it was too far out of our way. I guess I will just have to go back sometime, I would love to camp there for a week or so, but timing around the heat is so difficult.

Re: Trekkie Dad's 3/16-18 Trip Report with bonus report from Death Valley

On Thursday 3/20, we checked out of the Amargosa Hotel and went into Death Valley for the last time. Our objective was to do the Artists Drive and Gold Canyon before crossing the park and exiting to the west. Here are some pictures from where we stopped along Artists Drive:

And a couple shots of Gold Canyon:

Then we had to cross two mountain ranges before we got our first glimpse of the Sierras. I have no pictures, but I can attest the name "Sierra Nevada" is well chosen. It really does look like a gigantic snow-covered saw. We stopped at a visitors center in Lone Pine, where I had a host point out Mt. Whitney. Then we had lunch and headed north to Mammoth Lakes to spend the night.

Plenty of snow remained at Mammoth Lakes. (And it was plenty cold when we left the next morning.) I took a picture out our motel window.

We headed north to cross the Sierra through Carson Pass. On the way, I took a couple pictures of Mono Lake, near Lee Vining.

That's it for the pictures. We didn't stop in Carson Pass, and instead of passing through Jackson, I opted to take a couple of back roads (that I know from cycling) into Amador City for lunch at Andrae's Bakery. Not long after that, we were back home in Stockton.

This was certainly a trip for diversity. I forgot to mention we first saw snow on the grapevine heading toward LA. And I waited until the day we left Death Valley to decide which way to drive home. Had the weather been stormy, we would have gone south to Tehachapi Pass instead of Carson.

    Thanks for reading and viewing.

Great report! It was nice to see the pics of the Death Valley area, it's been almost 30 years since I have been there, doesn't look like much has changed! LOL

^Thanks. I'm thinking of uploading a few of the pictures from my wife's camera. I missed a few spots.

Apparently the name 'Death Valley' has a powerful reverse-psychological effect on many.

The native americans who lived there for over 1000 years were somewhat puzzled and insulted by that name.

They got even, though--'Chicago' is the French approximation of shikaakwa, which refers to the stink of onions in the native people's tongue.
