Solar panels on show building roofs

It seems to me Disneyland could cut some energy usage and have a solid marketing point if they put solar panels on the roofs of show buildings and other buildings. Many companies, like Google and Wal-Mart, etc., that have large buildings with lots of roof space are doing this.

Disneyland has half a dozen attractions, lots of backstage buildings, plus the current parking structure and future parking that could be retrofitted with solar panels. I realize there are structural issues involved, but they could add panels during major ride refurbishments.

Of course, Tomorrowland would be the place to showcase it. And Disneyland "going green" could be a big marketing campaign.

    Thoughts?

Coming up...."The Year Of A Million Solar Panels..." Sorry I couldn't resist!

But it sounds like a great idea. As you said many companies are already doing this, so it'll be good for Disney to get on the bandwagon!

I think that's a wonderful idea and would work particularly well if at least implemented in Tomorrowland, if not fully. :]

That's great news, I had no idea. I assume you're talking about the Disneyland Hotel? Are they on top of all three?

This has been discussed many times and most agree it's a good idea. I would only add that waterproofing will likely also be a major issue, so it would make sense to do it anytime they needed to replace the roofing on a structure. I don't know if this would be generally be done at the same time as a ride refurb. or not. (This is the downside of roof panels really though, they're in the way everytime you need to reroof.)

The parking structure should be done right away though. I'd be supprised if it would need a major structural upgrade, but it might, and it could actually make the top level a lot nicer for guests by providing shade.

I'm working right now on a building that will be installing a "Solar Tree" in the parking lot, which are designed to do just this, provide power, light, and shade. We're working with Envision Solar who also did Google's campus using this "Solar Grove" idea, if anyone's interested in finding out more see http://www.envisionsolar.com/

In fact, I think there is even a ride at WDW that is powered by the solar panels on its show building.

Refurbish Tomorrowland with solar panel and repaint the whole place over in solar panel color. Then you could add chrome parts. If you really want to go to extremes in energy efficientcy (which is a good thing) add wind power propellers everywhere too.

But...but...but...I wouldn't be able to get the placement right in my model until new aerial photos were finally taken!

Kidding. Well, no, I'm not, I mean, I still get ticked about the new HVAC units on the roofs that don't show up in the aerial photos...but environmental concerns are of just slightly greater importance. There's certainly plenty of roof space to work with.

That would be an amazing campaign for them... I have always thought that solar pannels would be amazingly effective for Disneyland... There are also several location in DCA that would be beneficial with a solar pannel plusing...

The problem is solar panels are still quite expensive and don't pay off themselves for what 12 years? I would have to look it up but thats the reason its not really a good alternative right now.
