What was the Golden Horseshoe modeled after?

I was watching a classic Errol Flynn film yesterday call San Antonio (1945) and most of the film takes place in a bar/stage show and man o man i swear I thought they were filming in the Golden Horseshoe. from the entrance, to the little seating booths in he corners on stage to the bar being on the right side.

Re: What was the Golden Horseshoe modeled after?

Legend Harper Goff designed it based off an earlier work for the film, 'Calmity Jane' with Doris Day.

Awesome, great find. I'll have to share this with the missus.

Golden Horseshoe + Chili Cheese Fries + Root Beer Float = JOY?

Re: What was the Golden Horseshoe modeled after?

The Golden Horseshow was based on the saloon that was built for the musical "Calamity Jane" starring Doris Day in 1954.

The original designer for the Warner Brothers movie was none other than Jungle Cruise designer Harper Goff.

Walt Disney tried telling Harper what he wanted, not knowing that Harper was the original designer of the Calamity Jane saloon. He told Harper, "I just want it to look like the saloon from Calamity Jane.

Harper redrew the saloon blueprints for a smaller scale and the rest is history.

Click the link above, there's a video that shows the stage at one point.

Re: What was the Golden Horseshoe modeled after?

I was just posting over on the "What to do with Frontierland" thread and suggested a couple of new shows for the Horseshoe. Wouldn't it be cool if the place looked like the image captures from the movie? That would give the land a new authenticity.

I take it you don't care for "Billy Hill and the Hillbillies"? Too bad... most people find that show to be hilarious.

Charlie, I LOVE Billy Hill and the Hillbillies. I've loved them since the BTBBQ and I think they're a great fit for the GHS. I do wish Disney would bring back the old show, or something similar maybe in the evenings or on the weekends. It would be great to see the can-can dancers up on that stage again, as well as a Slue Foot Sue and Pecos Bill. (Of course, Kirk Wall or John Eaden could fill those shoes very easily!) Perhaps they could have some sort of hybrid show and have the best of both worlds?

Great thread ~ The screen shots are amazing! It really does look like the film was shot right there in the park.

Re: What was the Golden Horseshoe modeled after?

Errol Flynn: You look surprised to see me.

Unknown Actor: I've handled you before... remember?

Errol Flynn: That's why I've come back.

Re: What was the Golden Horseshoe modeled after?

I just want to say, I love that we have so many people who know the history of Disneyland, and that most of them present it in a non know-it-all way.

Thanks for all this Charlie, I had no idea.
