Why not put "Mickey's PhilharMagic" in the Carthay Circle Theater

Walt's Disneyland was famous for having what Walt called weenies. Things that drew you into a land. Walt's weenies were real things you could do, like the steam train leading you into the park, or the Mark Twain drawing you into Frontierland, or the Rocket Jets high atop the People Mover platform.

California Adventure is filled with what I call limp weenies. Facades and mountains with nothing to them. Do we really need another limp weenie in California Adventure? I think not!

Disney, put something great inside the Carthay Cirlce Theater!

First, I want to say I am a fan of Mickey's Philharmagic and would love to see it in California.

Second, I don't think that the "theater" should be built as an empty building, THAT would be stupid since the building is a theater and a guest WOULD expect a show inside.

Third, the worst way to select attractions is through guest survey. That is how marketing got so many things WRONG about attractions. Great theme parks are like great works of art. You don't ask people ahead of time what would be great. I know if Leonardo da Vinci had asked people they would have said, "Don't do a half smile on that girl. Give her a full grin!" Walt Disney did not take polls as to what to build. He had a vision of what he thought the park should be, and he built it. He believed that people would like what he liked. And he was right!

So bottom line... Put something in there. MP would not be bad, but maybe not the best either. I would like to see some AA's at DCA and that would be the best place to put it. Make it a show place for the best Disney can make, not the least!

This is just so good - especially the part I've put in bold - that I just had to reply so it would be posted again in this thread .

I always come back to the story Art Linkletter tells about Walt showing him the orange grove. Linkletter says that he thought "nobody's going to come out here to throw balls at a target" - and this guy knew Walt! If he thought it was going to be about throwing balls at targets, imagine what the public thought - until Walt showed them (via television) what he was really doing - and then they wanted it.


I'm not interested in another 3D movie at DCA. They've already got two, plus HISTA over in DL, and the effects kind of run together for me between the different 3D movies (character flying into audience, water spraying on audience, etc.) Also, I saw Polar Express in 3D IMAX - I didn't even like the movie, but all non-IMAX 3D pales in comparison to that effect .


I agree that if you're going to build a theater, the audience is going to expect some kind of show to be in it. Why not an animatronic show about Walt Disney's life? That would solve the problem of there being too many film based attractions.

I mentioned in the other thread...having Philharmagic in the Cathay would be an easy (and IMO good) way of fixing the lack of new attractions for 2009 (new for west coast, at least). I do agree that would mean too many 3D movies in one park...but the solution to that is to replace one of the other two with a different kind of attraction when the second phase of DCA makeover begins sometime after 2012.

While I'm no fan of building an empty building (don't we have san francisco to fill that job description?), I'm no fan of forcing something that doesn't belong in there either. Mickey's Philharmagic does not belong and it's another 3D movie right inbetween the other two. Highly unnecessary.

Plus as it was p ointed out, it's another show and that's what they don't want.

The only show I'm for is the original plan for Walt Disney.

Not putting something in it and just cutting the corners is why DCA failed in the first place.

Great idea, but... wouldnt it be much better if they just wait until funds are available and develop a new show for the Carthay unique to DCA? PhillharMagic is great, but something new is always better than a clone of something else that's already in MK and HKDL.

Why would TDA want more theater shows? That was one of the biggest complaints about DCA - too many theater attractions.

They will still have Soarin and Bugs.

Either it's the end of the world, hell has frozen over, or because it just makes sense, I have to agree with MrLiver on this one.

The last thing DCA needs is another movie. For selfish geeky reasons, I'm pretty dang upset that the Walt Disney Story isn't coming anymore -- but I also totally understand why.

The only thing I'm wondering now is about the name of the area -- will the "Walt Disney Plaza" name stick? Of course the area will still feature buildings with important names and places harkening to Walt's life, but the big selling point of the Walt Disney Plaza name - The Walt Disney Story attraction - is now scrapped. The "Walt Disney Plaza" name will kind of seem out of place now because there won't be a defining anchor for it.

Oh well. I am upset about this, but the decision to cut back on the park's film attractions is a good move, and a smart one. I think it would be incredible overkill to put in Mickey's Philharmagic in the theater -- three 3D films in one park? Please, God, NO.

I agree with you that three 3D movies in one park is too much, but keep the best and get rid of the worst. The Muppets is the worst of the three. Mickey's Philharmagic is a great family show that does not have the scary moments that Bug's Life has.

But my preference is an AA show. For DCA to really be considered a Disney park, AA's need to be a park of it somewhere. In this prime location, it would work perfectly!

Now you will notice I am not suggest cloning something to put there. I think it should be original. But it needs to be an AA show.

The biggest problem with Mickey's PhilharMagic is the same as to why it cannot go into the Muppet*Vision 3D theater. That screen is specific to the one film. While films where supposed to be easily and often replaced and updated, Disney has not done that.

I really don't see the problem if the space can be rented out for special events. That could free up the former Who Wants to be a Millionaire building for future development. A less linear design would also keep staffing costs down.


Or, if too many shows is a problem, due away with one. I really enjoy It's Tought to be a Bug (never actually seen it in California) but that space, along with the theater, could be used for a moderate [multi level] attraction.

I think it would be great to bring this attraction to DLR, but definitely not in the Carthay Theater.

It would take such a great, new symbolic icon of the new DCA and quickly diminish it by housing a cartoon show. If Phiharmagic were installed there, it would feel like another classic DCA misstep.

I'd prefer something better and original for that spot in the park.
