Amazing: newspaper reporter goes to DL and DCA and has fun!

This newspaper reporter from Utah flies out to Anaheim. She visits Disneyland and California Adventure for the first time in her life. And guess what? She has fun! She doesn't make note of thematic problems or muddled marketing campaigns. She doesn't complain about bad show or a theme park built on the cheap. She does make the occasional factual error--my favorite is how she tries to refer to DHS by it's old name, but calls it "MGM Grand" instead. But none of that changes her enjoyment of her first trip to this magical place.

My first, long-awaited, much anticipated, wonderful trip to ... Disneyland
    (Deseret News, March 2)

With all the threads discussing problems with the parks, problems with theme, bad show, and lots of armchair imagineering, it's sometimes refreshing to see that people can enjoy their trips. I'm not saying that we should ignore or not talk about these problems! This is a Disney-related message board after all. We should be talking about these issues and our ideas for possible improvements. But every now and then, I think we forget how great a place the Disneyland Resort is. Reading this story made me remember how lucky we are to have a place like this to visit.

Obviously a naive and twisted individual with no appreciation for the finer points of theme parks.

Obviously if all she's done was WDW, she's gonna be impressed.

Re: Amazing: newspaper reporter goes to DL and DCA and has fun!

Though I count myself something of a “purist,” and I don’t like everything the writer liked (like the carnival rides in Paradise Pier), I must say that I too am glad to see a positive article about the DLR.

A few months ago, my editor at a local paper did an article about DL that mostly talked about how everything was so expensive, and how her kids were afraid on several rides, and how the drops on Pirates (which, she speculated, might have been added during the Johnny Depp refurb) got her soaking wet. She did praise NOS though.

A couple years ago, I did an article for the same paper focusing on the then-new BLAB. I tore BLAB apart, but I praised many other aspects of the parks, including California Screamin’ and ToT.

This writer brings up a couple of points that we purists often stress:

The sense of history. This is where it all began; where Walt's first dream came true. I couldn't help but think about that as I entered the gates.

    6. No age limits. Sure the kids have fun. But so do the adults. That was Walt's original premise; he wanted a place where parents didn't have to sit and wait while the kids played. And that's what it is.
There were lots of families, including grandparents. But there were also older couples without the kids. There were young couples and sweethearts and teenage school groups. There were also single adults of all ages; perhaps some were conventioneers like me, taking advantage of the proximity.

Almost her entire article is about how Disneyland is different than and distinctive from WDW. Take that, Mr. Rasulo and your DisneyParksTM brand .

Also, even this “Mary Sunshine” admits that:

    5. California Adventure Park.
This companion park is no EPCOT Center, but it's still a lot of fun. And most of it was new to me.
(I don't know what was up with the text of that article, but it's splitting up all the quotes like that and it won't let me change it.)

Just because we sometimes bash our heads on things here doesn't mean we don't enjoy the parks. Just wanted to clear that up. I know I get on thematic things, etc. myself sometimes, but when I walk through those turnstiles, I leave the world of today. I'm glad she had a wonderful trip and it was a fun read.

Our revels now are ended. These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits and Are melted into air, into thin air: And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff As dreams are made on, and our little life Is rounded with a sleep. mycroft16 on Twitter

This article was a real breath of fresh air. Although IMO the last few points felt a little bit like an advertisement. But in general it was a very nice and refreshing read compared to all the negativity that's out there.

I love perspectives like that! All the thematic quarrels and debates over acceptable quality are only meaningful if they're happening over a place we love, and I know Disneyland is a place I love. Ergo, I try to have at least as much fun as that reporter did. It's possible to note the problems and ponder possible solutions while still having the time of your life and appreciating the vast majority of good things in the resort.

Yup. If we didn't complain, Disney should really be worried.

two of my favorite attractions were right next to each other: the Haunted Mansion (here a Southern plantation instead of a Gothic manor house) and Splash Mountain. Sadly, I may have to downgrade Splash Mountain a bit on my list. They made me ride in the front seat, and I got soaked.
I do agree with her COMPLETELY on Splash Mt. The newer logs do get you drenched! and I used to LOVE Splash Mt. I have sadly been avoiding Splash Because of this happening to me that last couple of times I've ridden it.

And yeah, she is WAY to kind about Paradise Pier.
