Why destroy Haunted Mansion every Halloween?

I have one question and I apologize if this has already been hit on but I am new. One of my all time favorite rides when I was a kid was the Haunted Mansion when my parents would take me to WDW. The first time I went to DL in Sept. 07 I was on leave from Afghanistan and I was visiting my girl in LA. I was so excited because I hadn't been to a Disney park since 1994. All the rides seemed to be still there until I got to the Haunted Mansion and it was changed for the season to Nightmare before Christmas. Now I am opposed to changing the Mansion at all but if they have to why not wait until after Halloween? Nightmare before Christmas just doesn't seem to fit with the whole Halloween theme and why destroy a classic ride that should never be revamped.

Because the majority of park guests like it and eat up Nightmare Before Christmas merchandise. End of story as far as Disney is concerned. In this case unlike many similar cases however the emphasis is equally on the people liking it part.

It's just something different besides the regular HM.

Nightmare before Christmas is move about Jack Skeleton from Halloween town and find another holiday (Christmas).
Jack try to take over Christmas.

Disneyland do this to tie the to holidays and the line is long for the layover attraction.
also Disney is merchandising to the hill on this.

has anyone thought about the cumulative damaging effect of workers stomping around and covering/ uncovering everything on a 30 yr old attraction??

Well...no, they often actually make nice little modifications and improvements to the original attraction after HMH is removed. Unobtrusive, cool stuff that subtly makes the 40-year-old attraction better. In most cases, at least. They're careful.

This is very true indeed. For the most part I think Nightmare Before Christmas is so played out now.

I am not so much arguing with the fact that they do Nightmare Before Christmas. I realize that some people like it and that Disney is still a business and that they make money from it; God bless. My criticisim is their timing. I mean, when I go to a Disney park with Halloween right around the corner I don't want to go to a Christmas land; even if it is a haunted one. It would be like doing a Christmas parade on the Fourth of July. Just doesn't seem to fit but if I follow their logic that would be a good idea because it would get people in the mood to start buying Christmas presents early.

Re: Why destroy Haunted Mansion every Halloween?

Unfortunately for those of us who would like to have the "real" Haunted Mansion on Halloween, this whole "Nightmare before Christmas" deal started off as a marketing gimmick that took off, now that Disneyland management seems to need to constantly change original attractions for new marketing twists instead of just up keeping the park and focusing on new attractions and shows not just seasonal "overlays". This is what happens when the marketing people become in charge of creative operations, for the price of a overlay they now have "two attractions" never mind many guests want to see the "original" HauntedMansion, since Dland management seems to think that the "original" attractions are all dated and need to be refined with modern day easier to understand stories and placement of modern characters. Sad but true. One day a true creative will take over someone who has business sense but also a true creative sense. I believe John Lasseter is the closest we have to that now which is great but he is stretched way to thin and cannot focus on these types of issues.

And the reason it fits is that this is the actual film itself. Halloween taking over Christmas.

I'd buy the "merchandise" side if Disneyland put any effort into selling Hauted Mansion items. I know there would be a huge market if they sold more HM stuff. I for one would love a dress shirt with the HM wallpaper on it.

Personally, I think HMH is nice. It brings some change to the area and usually some rehab after its over. Its a bummer they can't put a overlay on Indy. That ride really needs some rehab.

The NBC Overlay may have some pro's and con's, but I think the biggest pro it has is that it keeps the ride technology up to date and guarantees that the ride will be refurbished each year. That is the biggest pro and the overlay is definatly worth it as far as that is concerned.

I my opinion, I think HMH is good for HM. Every year the place gets fixed up with modifications after HMH, both some you can see, and some you can't. Unlike WDW's HM where it just gets ignored for years at a time, DL's HM at least gets a annual check-up.
