    Disneyland After Dark...

    Ok, I don't know about you folks, but I'm like Walt in that I love being at DL after the sun goes down; it's like the funnest place just gets even more fun, and it's just such a different atmosphere.

    When my family and I took a trip to DL back in April of 2003 (of which I will be posting a separate retroactive trip report soon), my one request was to have an evening with just me and my camera to shoot all kinds of Disney stuff. Now, I enjoy most everything, but for some strange reason, I'm particularly fond of merchandise displays, how neat and tidy and "themed" they are. So, you'll see several of those throughout the photos in this thread. Also, understand that my photography equipment at the time wasn't all that high-speed (I have yet to invest in a digital SLR), but I thought most all of the pics turned out pretty darned good.

    So, crank up the Wayback Machine, and dial up April, 2003, and as darkness creeps into the park, let's see what we can see, shall we? I hope you all enjoy...

    ~~~~~
    Must get a shot of the station...
    Turning to head into the park...
    Cool... There's the Penny Arcade...
    ... and I could certainly use a frosty Coke...
    There's the castle, my favorite!
    Let's look a little closer, shall we?
    Oooo... Just the kind of stuff my daughter loves...
    No wonder... It's a shoppe for princesses!
    Ah, there's the carousel... Gorgeous at night...
    ... and the horses are magnificent!
    There's a fun dark ride (my daughter says donkeys make this sound... YEE HONK! Gotta love that...)
    Looks like Dumbo is busy entertaining guests, as always...
    More to come... Next we head over past Frontierland to New Orleans Square...
    Sleeping Beauty Castle looked a little lacking during the day back then, but at night, it looked great.
    Nice shots!
    Post #2... Following the River
    Well, since the girls are waiting on me, I have to make good use of my time. Let's see... Where to go from Fantasyland... Ah ha! Frontierland!
    There's the Mark Twain lit up for an evening cruise.
    Here's a shot across the river from the Mark Twain / Columbia landing across to New Orleans Square.
    Looks like a nice place to eat...
    Ooooo... One of my favorites... Can't wait to retire here.
    Great place to eat, but you have to keep the fireflies off the food AND watch for pirates.
    I hear this is a great place to eat, but alas, I'll have to take people's words for it...
    Charicature painting...
    A lunch box WITH a metal drink container inside..?!? Coolness...
    Some nightmarish decor...
    Ok, let's make a right turn out of the shop and head into the jungle... on the next post.
    Post #3... Into the Jungle
    Well, with my mint julep in one hand and snazzy new lunch box (with metal drink container inside!) in the other, I'm off to the mysterious jungle to snoop... and shop!
    Hmm... A generator of some kind. Someone must have set up camp out here.
    Ah ha! That's what I've been looking for! A boat tour of the darkest jungle... and in the dark, no less!
    Let's see, where are we going... Hmm... The Congo... Calcutta... Cool stuff...
    (GASP!) I can even shop in the jungle! WOO HOO! Primitive crafts? My 5-year-old makes those, too!
    Ewww... Dr. Lostmore can't be a happy guy with a head that small...
    Aww... Tiny dinos! Aren't they just precious..?!?
    Ahh... Dole whip... Mmmm...
    So, that's where I've been! Who'd have thought?
    Well now, if I head across the plaza, I'll pass this...
    ... and let's see where we end up in the next post!
    Re: Disneyland After Dark...
    Post #4... Back to the Future... Er, Tomorrowland (Yeah, That's the Ticket!)
    Well, well... I believe I'm heading into Tomorrowland.
    And of course, the world of the future is replete with neon signage for a super-futuristic look!
    Nothing like a ride on a Starspeeder 3000... Pretty cool... I'm partial to Endor myself...
    Oooo... Nice murals...
    On balance, I have to say I prefer Mary Blair's artwork though...
    HA! I caught all the neon Mickeys lit up... (and they are futuristic neon Mickeys, I should add...)
    Since we're over here, let's check out the stores. Oooo... Have a Buzz... Lightyear, that is...
    Oh no... These posters are drawing forth the Star Wars nerd in me... Curse you George Lucas!!!!
    "Oooo... Develop your photos, I can... or perhaps a DVD, you would care for, hmm?"
    If you've never seen a droid with an exasperated look on its face, please see below. Obviously, this CM is getting on R2's last nerve...
    "Bleep whirrrrr bloop blip BLEEP" Translation: Keep your hand away from my third leg lady!
    Wait a minute... How did THIS stuff get in Tomorrowland..?!? Stick with the theme people..!!!
    Ok, sorry about that. Ok, this is more Tomorrowland-ish... BIG rockets... Way cool!
    Just really enjoy the color in this photo...
    There's the Monorail station (note - presence of futuristic neon lighting... VERY important thematic element).
    Here's a look back toward "Club Buzz" (good riddance) and that awful Astro-Orbitron-rusted out-satellite dish-thing... Bob, John, Ed... If you do anything, PLEEEEEASE bring back the Rocket jets (and PeopleMover)!!!
    Ah... Didn't get enough of this on the trip from LAX, so let's drive!
    Nice, new loading area... Very nicely done... Cars look a little too "cartoony" though...
    And there's the sign for the train station (again, note the neon... OBVIOUSLY a sign of an advanced, futuristic civilization)
    Whew! Ok, where to next... Oooo... How about toward that nifty Swiss mountain over there?
    We're there dudes... in the next post!
    Post #5... To the Alps and Thence to Fantasyland (AGAIN!)
    Alrighty, my free time is running short for the evening, so let's head toward that HUGE mountain with the furry monsters inside.
    Is it just me, or can anyone else look at the Matterhorn and not long for the Skyway..? Oh, if only they would bring you back, dear Skyway...
    As late as it is, guests are starting to become scarce. How often do you see iasw without a mob of bodies in front of it?
    ... or an almost empty carousel? Kinda creepy...
    Here's something you don't see every day... The backside of a castle! (Wait, where have I heard that before..?)
    You GO Prince Phillip! Stick it to that nasty Malificent!!
    ... Cuz if you do, you get the girl (and some fairies at no additional charge!). WOO HOO!
    Oooo... Reflection... Snazzy...
    Ok, I'm looking down Main Street, and since I'm gonna get kicked out soon, we're gonna have to POWER SHOP! Check it out, next post...
    Beautiful night shots! And it's prince philip, not prince charming that rescues Aurora. I'm surprised your 5 year old hasn't corrected you!
    Post #6... Hittin' the Stores on Main Street... and A Little Something Extra...
    ALRIGHT!! Now it's time to do what tourists love most... Give our money to the Mouse! Let's hit those stores on Main Street...
    Looks like I'm amongst the stragglers closing down the park tonight...
    There's the photo supply shop...
    Mmmm... Suckers...
    ... and what a pretty glass elephant.
    Say it Bambi! "Pretty... Pretty flower!" Um... there's more than one Bambi. Pluralize it next time mister...
    Minnies and Plutos!
    Oooo... There's the jewelry store...
    ... and the clothier shop... (Since 1905? Where were they before they came to Disneyland..?!? )
    Ahh... The Crystal Arts store... gorgeous... and really, REALLY fragile...
    PLEASE don't touch anything!!
    Mickeys and Minnies and Goofys... Oh my! ( Sorry folks; couldn't help that one)
    Have a frame!
    Hmm.. I'd say Mickey's getting a bit fresh now... but I guess it's ok if you're getting married though...
    Love this Fantasia painting...
    OOOO! Can we play Pooh sticks!?!?
    Brrr... Very blustery-looking day...
    Cool figurines...
    A tribute to my mom, who to this day is a dedicated Tink fanatic... GO MOM!
    A veritable cornucopia of Disney literature...
    Have a hat... Um, if you're a young girl, of course... If not, you might want a different hat...
    Poohs and Tiggers and Piglets... Oh... Oh heck, ok I won't do it again... Sheesh...
    Not sure who THESE guys are, but at least they're colorful AND nicely posed. Oooo... and they have Mickeys on their feet!
    For the Mickey fan who can't seem to stay awake...
    Hmm... Shot glasses with little handles? Is that so the kiddies don't spill thier non-alcoholic whiskey or what..?!?
    Well, a cleaning CM is tapping me in the tush with a broom, so I think it's time to go... but wait! Wow... check THIS out..!! Talk about deserted...
    Oooo... no one but the crickets... Bizarre, is it not..?
    Let's get one at cricket eye-level... just for fun!
    And, of course, a parting shot of the castle... (Thank you nice Disneyland security guys!)
    Well, once you leave this land of fantasy, you find yourself back in...
    TA DA!!!!!
    Well, there's my shutterbugging trip to record some Disneyland After Dark. I hope you've all enjoyed it. I've got a few more trip reports to post in the coming days, so I hope to see you again soon. Peace...
