Morrigoon, you should write a letter to the so-called "manager" of this flea circus, er, menagerie, er, food establishment, and detail your experiences, as well as all the publicity they're receiving.

Not to get anything in return, of course, but to stick the knife in. Someone there obviously has to be oblivious.

I have a mind to make a reservation just so that I can flat-out refuse to pay the Admin fee.

I understand not being able to make a stink when it's 40 people, but I certainly would have - because 4% of a 40-person bill is far more significant a sum to dispute.

Wouldn't do any good. Let 'em get the bad press - it would have happened regardless of this one experience because there are ever so many more like it. Like I said, this was not my first bad experience at TJ's, so I imagine there must be tons of other (dis)satisfied customers out there.

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe...

Wow that is incredibly messed up. There are three restaurants at the DLR that I flat out have had so many horrid experiences in that I will not eat there anymore (I gave each of these restaurants multiple chances):

    1) Storyteller's Cafe (when you have to argue with the manager that he needs to take the pasta with HAIR BAKED INTO THE CHEESE off the bill, there's a problem. Or when the sandwich has been sitting out so long that the bread is mush. Or when they serve you raw chicken. Or when the waiter tries clearing your food WHILE YOU ARE EATING so he can flip the table. Or when.... well you get the idea.)

    2) Catal -- I had a similar experience as described above by Bacon where we were waiting for 45ish minutes for drinks. After asking repeatedly. An hour for food. After asking repeatedly. We asked for the manager multiple times and it took him 45 MORE minutes to come over to the table... he said he "didn't want to disturb us" ... uuhhhhh WHAT??? We were going to walk out of there without paying, but my mom felt bad about doing that. Though we did leave zero tip. The manager and I got into a screaming argument... I mean the dude didn't even apologize. I've worked as a waiter and at the very least you offer something to make up for the abysmal service.

    3) Tortilla Jos -- HORRIBLY expensive for tasteless food. The margaritas were ok. I remember having some sort of AP problem when we went in a group that time too (probably about a year ago?). What is the deal with the Patina Group? I always thought they used to be high-quality.

Brennan's is the way to go at the Resort.

Not that you're biased, right Bog?

I still disagree about Storyteller's, but OMG, I'd totally forgotten about the rotten Uva Bar experience (though I still remember a different time when the manager asked me if I was ready for another daquiri and I told him I was waiting for the rest of my first one - their drinks are so SMALL!)

LOL well the Brennan's I worked at in N'Awlins and the Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen are owned by different (and still feuding) sides of the Brennan family.

    Still. Yummy spicy jambalaya.

Well, I'm really going to enjoy my Disneyland Resort spending boycott more than I anticipated.

Cause, now that I think about it, too many Disneyland restaurants are off my list. Catal was such crap last time that I sorta added them to my nix list. But it was the one poor experience out of 6, so maybe I'll cut them the benefit of the doubt.

Tortilla Jo's sounds like it should be permanently nixed.

Naples has been off on the nix list since it opened.

Re: Tortilla Joe's - Never again

I haven't read this whole thread and this might have been said already but TJ's hasn't had the AP Appetizer Deal for about 6 months now. They DO offer AP discounts on the checks with Premuim APs.

Re the service fee, that is standard with large groups. Most will not even accommodate large groups without going through banquet or event services which has a price as well.

Restaurants are designed to run smoothly with lot of small groups. They can accommodate larger groups but it is an entirely different process for a restaurant to handle. I've worked with many a restaurant in my event planning days and am familiar with their policies. It sounds like TJs is just doing what they need to do to run their business effectively.

I'm sorry if I'm repeating what someone else already mentioned. I'm off to, of all places, a restaurant.

I wouldn't say Patina sucks overall, but at DTD they sure seem too. We also had a HORRIBLE experience at Catal, and I never plan to go back.

Our wedding was catered by them (at the Bowers Museum), and I've had great meals at Patina restaurants in Downtown LA. I think they're first rate, but I've been sorely disappointed by Naples, Catal (although the UVA Burger is great!), and Tortilla Jos. I will go back to UVA Bar, and Naples is OK for pizza/pasta, and Tortilla Jos is fine for margaritas and aps, but for a nice meal out they won't get my money. I wonder why they are so different from the other Patina locations.

If a letter is written you might think about printing this whole thread and attaching it to the letter. Maybe they will get the hint and clean up their act a little bit.

    Again - NOT GOING THERE!

Re: Tortilla Joe's - Never again

Ok, now here's my rant....I would have preferred Rainforest, but they would not take us until after 9pm. Derek said "We should have gone to Jazz Kitchen" hahahaha. Anyway. My enchilada was good, the rice I would not touch because it looked like it had been under the heat lamp ALL DAY!!!! The tamale was so bad even the Hispanic communities in the surrounding areas would have been appalled!!!!! (This coming from a girl who's had the real deal on Christmas Eve...so yea I'm a snob) Shoot we had a mariachi band at my church in December was more than thrilled to be singing for us. I didn't know about the admin fee until we got home and had I known they were going to do that prior to us getting there I would have suggested we walk over to Tony Roma's or SOMETHING. Derek said the admin fee served as the tip because he looked at it and said "THey added a admin fee and I'm not giving them a tip".

Sorry for that guys!!!! Next time...don't put me in charge of reservations I promise my reception food will be better!!!!

From Derek: The salsa was good!!! Out of all the Tex Mex places that I've eaten at, these chips and salsa were among the best i've had (of course, that doesn't say much, seeing as how NC isn't exactly Mexican Food Central )

Back to Katie: Yes, now ask him if TJ's chips and salsa is BETTER than Blue Agave???? I think not!!!!!

Regarding service, the rest of the restaurant didn't seem all that busy; there were empty tables so it wasn't as if they were stretched thin at all. I've been asking around since our experience there on Sunday, and no one I've talked to has ever HEARD of an "administrative fee" on a restaurant check. We were had, and had good.
