The Jungle Spiel, what is it that makes it great?

Just Curious what makes a good cruise from a bad cruise. No wrong answers. Recently I have ridden at least 15 times, out of that 1 was good as expected (old friend who I knew) 2 were good and completely unexpected (people I did not know). So here is that million dollar question... what makes it good for you?

It's definitely how it is delivered!! The skip hs to be enthusiastic and into the spiels. Fresh and new, Disney appropiate, jokes are an added bonus too. Gotta love the adlib. Too bad management won't let the skips go off script.

I'd vote for all except the last 3 and the "volume" choice.

A combination of corny, old and (occasionally) new jokes, creatively delivered (without cynicism or bitterness) by a skip who's clearly having fun on the job, woven into a themed story... and a bit of interaction with the crew... for me that's what makes a great Jungle Cruise!

Personally, I can't stand the corny jokes. I've never had the privelge of having a skipper ad-lib either. Love the cruise at night though! Except for that freezing jungle rain!

    I love the jokes. xD
    I'm such a nerd.

But I love when the Skips are into it and not kinda "blah".
If that makes any sense, lol.

Like the one who asked if anyone had ridden before and I rose my hand.
And then when we went by the spear guys, the skip was like "What're you guys gonna do? I've got Alyssa!"
    It made me laugh.
For certain you must be lost to find the places that can't be found. Elseways, everyone would know where it was.

For me, it's always been the delivery. If the captain is enjoying himself, then we enjoy it that much more, and it turns from a 10 minute cruise through audio animitronics into a terrific time that can't be beat elsewhere in the park.

And I have to confess that I miss Mikey. Jose is getting pretty good right now, though.

I love the soundtrack--I always end up humming it all day after riding...

Characters is not in this poll! Ok so I haven't even seen one Skip be a character but I always want to see one.

Delivery and fresh spins on old jokes is always my favorite.

The best Jungle cruises are long gone. The caliber of skips today is too varied and the inability to add to the show is not allowed. personally I like cruises at night better because there are some things that can't be done in the day such as doing the whole cruise without lights, or pointing out the wrong things during the spiel.

Agreed about the night cruises. That was my selection in the poll. At night you can almost block out the skip enough to feel that you are actually in a mysterious, virtually unexplored jungle.

I'm not sure exactly what it is. It's kind of like porn, I can't define it, but I know it when I see it. (Can I use the word porn in here? Not that I've actually every seen any.) I think my favorite is wait to see how the skip asks you to leave the boat. It's kind of like you are suppose to have bonded with the skip and then in the end he/she really let's you know that you mean nothing to them, which is I'm sure pretty much true, but you laugh at the fact that here at Disney a CM is able to kind of tell you off. My two favorites the I loved when I first heard them were the (in a subtle tone) "Let me tell you something that my dad told me when I turned 18. (harsh voice) GET OUT NOW!, oh I'm sorry that was mean, GET OUT." and the other on was "If you enjoyed you ride my name is John and this is the Jungle Cruise, if you didn't, my name is Sally and this is Storybook Land." The first one is unexcected and catches you off guard and the second one plays on the what if you don't even know what you are riding/calling the guest stupid.

Don't go see improv if you can't take the heat! Jungle is the Disney version of improv.
Stalking is when two people go for a long romantic walk together but only one of them knows about it.

True, but the freedom isn't there as much. If it was ok to be totally improv but hit the key points of the cruise... oh man. Fun times abound.

    I like that answer.

I always enjoyed the JC, but it really had nothing to do with the skipper, or the spiel. I guess the humor in the spiel always seemed a little too contrived, and a little too predictable. And I really haven't ridden the attraction all that much over the years (even though I worked in attractions for ten years in the 80s, and have visited the park throughout the 90s and so on).

I know I'm definitely in the minority in my opinion, but I'd almost like the JC better with a straight spiel that focuses on the adventurous aspect of it. Taking a night cruise really does have a great feel to it, and I feel totally engaged by what's going on around me, rather than what the skipper is saying.

Then again, my funny bone has always been more effectively impacted by humor found in shows like the Andy Griffith Show, or Mary Tyler Moore. Where the behavior of the characters is emphasized, rather than just a bunch of characters cracking jokes. Seinfeld and Frasier had some of that too....where characters aren't running around trying to be funny, they just are by virtue of who they are.

The jokes are obviously a staple of the attraction, and have been there forever, so they're here to stay. I guess if they have to be there, a more subtle, or naturally-delivered spiel comes off best for me. When the skipper doesn't take the jokes, or himself, too seriously.

Intentional joke-cracking has never done much for me though. It seems a little too forced.

Surfer, that's how I feel about Storybook. I wish there was no spiel. But sometimes I like it. Eh. My last Storybook captain was great.

I listen closely to the spiel. I hate being disappointed!
