One year of playing, huh? Not bad at all. Keep exercising your ability to play by ear, and you'll get better and better. Don't be afraid to experiment with adding chords and such in the left hand. (And if you ever have any specific questions, just let me know--I play my own arrangements of all of these and have a great time. )

Oh, and one little correction--the Dick Dale soundtrack was from 1995, not 1977.

Yeah, it's tough at first--when I began toying adding left hand material by ear, the results were often catastrophic. If it's something you want to pursue, I recommend learning some music theory, in terms of different kinds of chords. You've got major chords and minor chords, and between those two, you've got the harmonic framework of a lot of pieces. For example, in the key of C, the chords for Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah are C - F - C - F - C - D - G - C - F - G - F - C - G - C. It'll just take lots of practice and experimentation and very, very close listening. Try to pick apart the sounds you hear and figure out what other notes are being played along with the melody. And like I said, if you ever have any specific questions, I get a huge kick out of playing Disneyland music and film scores by ear--I go crazy if I don't get to play often enough! So just let me know, and if it's something I haven't played before, heck--maybe that'll give me a chance to tell you more about my process. Anyway, keep up the great work!

Not bad at all! I taught myself how to play by ear, but it really did help once I learned the notes and placement. You're doing a great job!

Good job for learning to play by ear! I would highly recommend learning to read music... it's an art form and would really add to your piano forte... Keep tickling those ivories and don't forget to keep us posted.
