Revive Farrell's Ice Cream in DCA

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/rocketr...7603990508693/

Since Paradise Pier at DCA is going to be rethemed to a romantic Victorian boardwalk, some old fashion articles should go in such as an old fashion ice cream parlour. Not just an old fashion parlour but Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour. The last one in the nation closed down in Summer of 2006 in San Diego. There are two left but they are just walk-in establishments. One is at Del Mar Fairgrounds and the other is at Santa Monica Pier. For the future of its revival an old fashion Farrell's should be established on the pier.

I like it. I have never been to Farrell's, but the concept sounds good to me.

Ah Farrell's, that and Swensen's (I'm so happy to have found a location in San Francisco!) I spent many a birthday (mine and others) in those parlors. I would love to see those warm interiors, complete with model train running around its tracks close to the roof while eating neon blue bubble gum ice cream. I had a fondness for spitting out the gumballs into a napkin, then creating a mothfull of chewy, gooey, sugary goodness. I would welcome a shop like this in DCA. Ghiradelli Square just isn't the same somehow.

I miss Farrell's! Anyone remember "The Zoo" or "The Pig Trough?"

Of course, you were sick for a week, but that was back when you could actually get a ton of ice cream for under 10 bucks.

For the same price, now you can get a single sized serving at Cold Stone. If you want the crushed Heath Bar, you're probably looking at TWO zoos.

Ah, yes, the zoo and the pig traugh. I didn't like either because they were too big and busy (by the time you got down to the bottom it was 8 kinds of ice cream all melted together).

I remember the good old black and white (vanilla with chocolate syrup).

    Oh, those were the days!

I remember that place! I used to go to the one on Beach Blvd in Huntington Beach all the time. I remember I had a birthday party there one time. I had the Zoo and it had candles on it and we shared it with all my freinds.

I remember my oldest brother ate the Trough all by himself and the waiters marched around him with a huge bass drum and gave him a ribbon for finishing it on his own.

    That was a fun place!

I remember the Pig Trough very well. I still might have a ribbon that says "I made a pig of myself at Farrell's"

For those of you who never went to a Farrell's you have to understand that it was a very noisy and raucous place. Once a group of friends of mind went to Farrell's for a friendís birthday and we broke into the Mongolian Birthday song (also known as the SCA birthday song). By the time we were done the whole building was dead silent and everyone was looking at us. Ö.. Yes, good times.

Oh that would be fabulous wouldn't it? Farrell's totally fits. Way more than McDonalds EVER did.

The 'zoo' birthday was the best--two employees running around the parlor delivering a litter filled with ice cream and blowing whistles!! As a kid (or, even arguably AS AN ADULT) what's not to like?

There's one at Santa Monica Pier? I didn't know that.

There is one more in Santa Clarita, at Mountasia Miniature Golf. But it's a pretty pale imitation of what once was. Still, glad it's there at all!
Does anyone even bother with signatures anymore?

I believe there is one in San Diego (Farrells) . I remember them both. Swensens lasted longer than Farrells. I remember HATING being taken to Farrells on my birthday. My parents thought I was just being shy but I hated being sung to in front of everyone. I used to live next door to Swensons at the PruneYard in Campbell. loved it.

    HOLY WOW!

I used to go to these places a lot too. I even had a Farrell's frisbee! I wish I knew where it was. Probably on the roof of some neighbor's house. Swensen's was another favorite.

I mean, just thinking about the Soda Fountain in Hollywood.... it's funny that Gibson Girl is like the closest thing to that. But not nearly the same at all.

I like this idea. I used to go to the Farrell's on Whittier Blvd. in Whittier after the Friday night high school football games. Never had the Pig Trough.

Their sundaes were awesome. Brings back a lot of memories.
