Disneyland Monday - Let's talk about Main Street.

I thought this might be fun for the following week. Each day I pick a Disneyland topic for the day and if you like you can comment,

Today's topic: Let's talk about Main Street.

Disneyland's Main street is patterned after 1900 America. It has a City Hall, Fire Station, and vehicles present in the early 1900's. It was definitely a quieter time, a slower paced time, than the one we live in now.

Disneyland's Main Street, is what you see, when you first enter the park. A lot of magic has happened on that street. It is home to carriage rides. the afternoon parade, and the nightly fireworks can be seen easily from it. You can catch old time movies at the cinema. Play a game in the penny arcade and shop to your heart's content. Too bad not at 1900 prices.

So Let's Talk about Main Street.

I think to some people, Main Street itself, is an attraction.

There is the horse drawn trolly, the cars, double decker bus and the opera house. So main street does have some "small" atractions.

Main Street also features the main depot for the Disneyland Railroad. That qualifies as an attraction, right?

For those of you who wish to learn more about the very concept of American "Main Streets," and even how Walt Disney and his creative team developed some of their ideas, you can do no better than to read this book: Main Street Revisited.

I love the scents along Main Street and the dioramas in the windows.

Don't forget the Main Street Cinema

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe...

Where else can you find Rod Miller?

I think for me, the music of Main Street really touches my heart. It makes me feel like a kid again. I try and walk down that street, but it seems no matter how hard I try, I end up skipping every time!

Re: Disneyland Monday - Let's talk about Main Street.

Without a doubt Main Street is my favorite land in Disneyland.

I love the sights, smells and atmosphere. I have had quite a few trips to Disneyland where I barely even left Main Street. There is such a great evergy there. People are excited to see the more major attractions at Disneyland but you can also sense from first-time visitors a sense of awe. Main Street is a perfect place to people watch and like Barbaraann said above the entire "land" itself is the attraction.

Riding the horse-drawn carriages up and around the hub, browsing all the shops and taking in all their detail, watching the American Flag being taken down at the end of the day, having lunch at the Carnation Cafe, watching a few classic Mickey shorts in the theatre, learning about Walt and our countries history at the Mr. Lincoln exhibit, watching delicious looking candy being made, singing along with the piano player, The Dapper Dans, getting a lucious ice cream treat, man what could be beter than this?

Main Street is totally unique and enchanting. To me it's the most successful of the lands in transporting you another place and will forever epitomise Disneyland.

Thank-you for giving me the opportunity to ask an incredibly stupid question.

You can actually go IN the Main Street Cinema? All this time I thought it was just for atmosphere! How does one get in? Through the curtains? I always thought I'd get in trouble for going backstage or something.

That's just precious! Of course you can go in there. Walk through the turnstile and curtains then stake out a place to watch the show. If memory serves, there are five screens each showing a different short. The heavy curtains are there to block out the sun for better viewing.

If it were really a place you were not supposed to enter it would be secured much better than just hanging a curtain. have no fear your next visit and pop on in for a break from the heat and enjoy a show or two!

Steamboat Willie is usually playing on one of the screens at any given time. It's worth the time to watch. I uope they're using a digital projector. Those films are not forever.
