Angry What the heck happened to the Grand Canyon?

Ok, so I was at Disneyland today with my goddaughter, her mother (my aunt) and my grandmother. We boarded the Fred Gurley (yes, I remember which train) in Tomorrowland heading to New Orleans Square. Of course, you head into the Grand Canyon and Primeval World dioramas.

We get in the dark and you hear the spiel about the Grand Canyon. We hear the music. Just one problem.

    It's still dark......not dioramas....(WTF?!)

Of course, it being dark in there (It doesn't help I am as blind as a bat with no depth perception) I'm thinking, 'Where the is freakin' Grand Canyon?' My goddaughter, who is 4 1/2 and in the middle of her 'afraid of the dark' phase (we can barely get her on Peter Pan) starts to wig out a little and can only be consoled by being passed from my grandmother, from me, to her mother. The Primeval World appears and all is well. But I still have one question...

WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED TO THE GRAND CANYON????!!!?!?!

(I'm assuming it's being refurbed or something, but does anyone have a more "solid" answer?)

There was a landslide - which killed everybody in the train that had preceded you. Got to credit the clean-up crew for removing the mess so quickly.

Don't worry. The canyon's still there. It was just a lighting problem.

This very issue was brought up in this thread too. Although you have to scroll down to post #12 before you get someone who contributed some helpful information. Some of the other "speculative" posts were amusing though. However, as you speculate, it appears that it's refurb-like work going on with the lighting and other effects. Or some "TLC" as the other thread is so titled.

Thanks for the update, Armadillo. However, there's plenty of time to do refurb work after hours on simple emclosed sets. It was a short lived electricle/lighting problem plane and simple.

Thank you Ride Warrior and Armadillo.

I agree, what do you need to do to some taxadermied animals? (DUST THEM OFF once in a while!) I wish they would have left some kind of light on in the tunnel at that point, though. It's very disconcerning to be in the dark for so long, and like I said, it totally upset my goddaughter!

What you experienced was the nighttime Grand Canyon. Didn't you see the bats?

The way the Dioramas are set up now, we go back in time as the transition between the Grand Canyon and Primeval World. The Cavemen segment could go after the Dinosaurs.

to that comment! I would think it would show up on the new DVD and blu-ray, I mean it was what Sleeping Beauty was paired with on it's original theatrical release.

Cavemen would actually go between the dinosaurs and the Grand Canyon. Historically, dinos came first, then cavemen, then the present-day animals of the Canyon.

I think this is the reason.. If you were at the Grand Canyon you would have been able to start a fire, so you could see around you but due to the laws in California you are just sitting in the dark...
