New 3D model: Sam McKim's never-built Haunted Mansion

Howdy, y'all! I already mentioned this in The Thread 3, but I figured not everyone reads it (unfortunately!), so I thought I'd bring it up in its own thread. For those of you've got signatures turned off or otherwise managed to not notice my sig, I've been working on a 3D model of as much of Disneyland as possible in a free program called Blender. It's been a lot of fun, but two months ago, I followed GRD999's suggestion to re-create a version of the Haunted Mansion that was never built. Sam McKim created this concept in...I dunno, probably the very early 60s. He left behind elevation plans and an aerial illustration--just enough for me to make an accurate model.

If you want to see all of the complete renders, check out GRD999's Ghost Relations Department blog. I'll provide a little sampling here, though. You can click these for full-sized versions.

That last one is a wallpaper image that combines 3D elements with parts I painted in Photoshop. You can also check out work-in-progress renders on my blog. And here's a YouTube video for good measure. Enjoy, and do let me know how I can improve!

Very nice work! But I think our current HM looks much better. This was a neat alternative though. I don't study showbuildings, but it looks like that one is smaller than our current one. Is it just me, or does it look like that ride-through would be smaller?

It's always fun seeing where things might have gone and seeing how the original ideas were incorporated into the final version. The model looks amazing Data. Great work as always on this project, and I love the wallpaper you made out of it.

Our revels now are ended. These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits and Are melted into air, into thin air: And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff As dreams are made on, and our little life Is rounded with a sleep. mycroft16 on Twitter

Nice work Data, I already thought you were a little nuts trying to model all of Disneyland, now that you're modeling things that were never built, I'm sure you're crazy. Very cool though. Just like DL, I believe you've embarked on a a few projects that will never be completed.
The Mickey audience is not made up of people; it has no racial, national, political, religious or social differences or affiliations; the Mickey audience is made up of parts of people, of that deathless, precious, ageless, absolutely primitive remnant of something in every world-wracked human being which makes us play with children’s toys and laugh without self-consciousness at silly things, and sing in bathtubs, and dream and believe that our babies are uniquely beautiful. You know…the Mickey in us.

I agree, though this design has certainly grown on me.

Yes, it's much smaller. Probably would have housed a small walkthrough, not a ten-minute Omnimover attraction.

Not crazy at all, he's actually providing us with a glimpse of something we never got to see. I'm sure that Sam McKim's relatives would like to see this thread.

AWESOME Data!!! That version of the mansion looks like it could be near the ocean or something to that extent. Nice work!

Great Job Data! I love the walk through on You Tube!

This will undoubtedly be another annoying fact I can tell my wife next time we go to NOS! Then when we get home I'll have pictures to show her too!

Check out My Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 rides... I'm always working on another one... I hope they make you want to go to Disneyland.

It looks awesome, Data! That shows your talent right there, to take something that never actually existed and re-create it in a 3-D rendering model with only concept drawings and blueprints! It looks like this version wouldn't go outside the berm. Is that true?
