"Not an admirable Disney decade"? Heck, I think the whole thing was worth it if only for Indiana Jones. A lot of unfortunate stuff happened, but Disneyland has still been plenty admirable throughout.

    1. Light Magic Parade

    2. Making a parade out of every new Disney animated film to come out

    3. New Tomorrowland

    4. Replacing Skyway, Mission to Mars, Submarine Voyage, PeopleMover (for three years), Motor Boat Cruise, Mike Fink Keelboats with nothing.

    5. Making the Penny Arcade into a store

    6. Closing the Tahitan Terrace

    7. Painting Small World with bright pastel colors

    8. Replacing Swiss Family Treehouse with Tarzan's Treehouse

    9. Letting Chip n' Dale Treehouse deteriate into a former shadow of itself

    10. Discontinuing the Main Street Electrical Parade.

Re: The Top 20 Mistakes that Disneyland made during the 90's

    Mistakes....

    1. Taking out the Peoplemover

    2. Removal of the Disneyland Hotel Lagoon

    3. Toontown

    4. Electrical Parade Glowing Away

    5. Rocket Jets an Elevator lift removed

    6. That Gold/Brown paint they spackled around Tomorrowland

    7. Country Bear Playhouse Removed (I know it was 2001, but close enough)

    8. Allowing the Carousel Theater to sit dormant for most of the decade, and creating innoventions as its new tenant.

    9. Light Magic

    10. Ditching plans for WestCot

On the other hand... while the 90's may have been a lean decade, not all was negative. Here are the best brite spots in my opinion...

    1. Indiana Jones Adventure... one of the greatest attractions in Disney History

    2. Fantasmic is a timeless classic

    3. Addition of music to Space Mountain enhances the experience infinitely

    4. Fantasyland Theatre Shows were entertaining

    5. The 35th Celebration/Party Gras was amazing (Dream Machine)

    6. Festival of Fools was a great time, its a shame it was so short lived

    7. And I know this isn't a theme park issue, but the 90's were a Golden Age for Disney Animated Features. We got Beauty and the Beast, Alladin, Pocahontas, Hunchback, Toy Story, A Bugs Life, Mulan.

While changes are never accepted by all, we did get some positives out of the 1990's... it wasn't an entirely lost decade. We did lose alot, be then again, there were som positive gains.

    Mistakes

    01. Light Magic
    02. New Tomorrowland

    05. Skyway is removed
    06. The American Space Experience
    07. Getting rid of Videopolis
    08. Mickey's ToonTown

Re: The Top 20 Mistakes that Disneyland made during the 90's

Countdown style 10 – 1, with 1 being the worst.

    10. Closure of Mission to Mars, replaced by a pizza joint.

    9. Light Magic

    8. Tarzan’s Treehouse, which lead the charge in the “characters instead of immersive environments” movement.

    7. The homogenization of Disneyland stores

    6. Making half of Toontown a glorified McDonald’s Playland, later 90% shuttered by lawyers, plus one sparsely themed kiddie coaster – the first Disney coaster to have “Coaster” in the title, I think.

    5. Innoventions – Disneyland’s infomercial. (And don’t go bringing up Kaiser Hall of Fame or the Bathroom of Tomorrow – that was decades ago, and Walt ran out of money after hocking his own life insurance policy to get Disneyland built! )

    4. Closure of Motorboat Cruise, Subs, Skyway and Keelboats, all replaced unapologetically by nothing, the latter three to the detriment of the park’s visual kinetics. (Subs, of course, was eventually revived with Nemo).

    3. Overall Tomorrowland ‘98 theming. The “World on the Move” feel of the previous Tomorrowland is almost completely lost. A bronze paint and neon overlay make for a pale, pale imitation of Disneyland Paris’ Discoveryland. Gets a few points for nostalgic cuteness, such as the old Tomorrowland references in the murals, but that was probably intended to butter up the purists so they wouldn’t notice what was lacking, and what does it say about your redesign when the best part is the tribute to how the land used to be?

    2. Rocket Rods – The ultimate E-ticket cheap-out. The only completely new attraction to open with the New Tomorrowland, it required no show building, scenery, effects, animatronics or figures of any kind to be specially built for it, yet they still lacked the budget to bank the turns and make the ride functional. It ousted the People Mover and Circle Vision 360, then left the former a barren track for years on end, while the latter became the home of BLAB, and its ominous accompanying buzzword “interactivity.”

    1. The Observatron – the prominent, elevated beacon of the on-the-cheap late Eisner years.

This was a potentially interesting weenie concept - a device to contact alien life - that could have unified the whole land – I’m assuming those neon towers on Star Tours and Buzz (I think there’s still one on Buzz?) have something to do with it.

What’s there, however, is quite clearly the guts of an abandoned attraction, dressed up with a few now-out-of-place retro-tommorow accents and a bunch of junky-looking satellite dishes. Calling attention to itself with loud blaring music, it spins, and as the big finish, the big satellite dish opens up.

Perhaps worst of all is that while many parts of TL ’98 at least had the decency to revert to their previous forms, The Observatron is still there, unchanged, 10 years later. I’ve said it before, but I’m going to say it one more time anyway – call Wall-E to clean this junkpile up!

Positive highlights (in no particular order):

    - Fantasmic!
    - Indy
    - Adventureland retheming (I liked the previous version, too).
    - Toontown, thematically
    - Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin
    - New parade every year, instead of a new parade with the same handful of characters every few years.
    - 35th celebration, especially Party Gras
    - Dick Dale soundtrack on Space Mountain
    - Gummi Glen theming for Motorboat Cruise – hey, it gave you something to look at .

I agree.. The mistakes really started in the mid 90s with the removal of the Skyway.

    You could say Pressler.

The Subs were always breaking down, but now they are back with Finding Nemo!. It is pretty cool, but not worth the wait.

I agree 100% with you on #1 Light Magic was a disaster.

However, I will say that having a new parade for each animated film was a good thing because it meant that we got a new parade every few years instead of the current parade which hangs around for the next 8-10 years.
