Matthew Perry returning to NBC - The Hollywood Reporter 1/27/06

Jan. 27, 2006

Perry returns to peacock in Sorkin project

Quote:
Matthew Perry is returning to NBC.
After lengthy on-again, off-again negotiations, the "Friends" star has signed on to star in Aaron Sorkin and Thomas Schlamme's new untitled drama for NBC, previously known as "Studio 7." D.L. Hughley and Steven Weber also have been cast in the ensemble show, set behind the scenes at a fictional long-running sketch-comedy series in the mold of "Saturday Night Live." Perry will play Matt Albie, a genius comic writer who was forced out of his position as co-executive producer on the sketch show after a dispute with the network, UBS. Sorkin wrote the part with Perry in mind. (Nellie Andreeva)

He received back-to-back Emmy Award nominations for his work on Aaron Sorkin's The West Wing, seems like a good match. Thankfully he did not guest on Joey, could've hurt his chances...

You beat me to another one Alias! lol!

Anyway.. I think this looks like it has a lot of potential. With Sorkin, Shlamme and the 3 very good, yet often underated stars this could be really good. The biggest challenge it will face is getting people to look beyond the past sitcom lives of the actors long enough to give the new show a chance.

The story was too good! I think his case will be different. Having done the The West Wing with the industry bestowed drama nominations is a very unique situation for a Friend. Plus with TWW's recently announced cancellation it's core audience should be panting for a new TV haven.

Best TV News I have heard in a long long while! Perry and Sorkin is an excellent match and gives Matt a chance to stretch his dramatic skills while at the same time drop into the occassional funny bit- I mean what writer on SNL doesn't have funny neurotic moments- its gotta be the ground work of most of the writing! This sounds brilliant and with West Wing going off air, I need a new Sorkin fix.

Does it sound a little bit like Sorkin's other show Sports Night? I wonder how many West Wingers will roll to this new show eventually. Sorkin keeps tight company if you look at his track record, he stays with a very select group of actors and attracts a great group of guest stars to his shows.

You're right. It does sound a bit like a new take on the Sports Night concept. That's fine with me though. I loved that show. I was really dissapointed it didn't catch on and last longer, but I think Sorkin has a much bigger fan base now than he did then. This should help a lot.

Amanda Peet has joined the cast as well as several others: http://www.moviehole.net/news/20060203_the_whole_60_yards.html

It appears we also have a working title for the series. I'd like to see them shorten it to just "Studio 60". Peet makes a nice addition to this group I think.

^ Fantastic news, keeps getting better and better!
And the comedy ensues already... they posted a photo of Matthew w/ Natasha Henstridge not Amanda Peet!

Peet gets on list for 'Studio 60'

Amanda Peet

Amanda Peet is reuniting with her "Whole Nine Yards" co-star Matthew Perry, this time on the small screen.

Peet has been tapped to star opposite Perry in Aaron Sorkin and Thomas Schlamme's new project for NBC, now titled "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip."

Evan Handler ("Sex and the City"), Michael Stuhlbarg ("The Pillowman"), Nathan Corddry ("The Daily Show") and Carlos Jacott ("Fun With Dick and Jane") also have joined the ensemble cast of the Warner Bros. TV show set behind the scenes of a fictional broadcasting network's flagship late-night sketch comedy show.

Peet will play Jordan McDeere, the newly appointed president of the network.

WEST WING’S Whitford & Busfield & Sorkin: Together Again For STUDIO 60!!

Quote:

“West Wing” vets Bradley Whitford and Tim Busfield have been repurposed to fill key roles in “West Wing” creator Aaron Sorkin’s backstage-at-faux-SNL hourlong “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,” which NBC premieres this autumn.

Red-hot “Deadwood” actress Sarah Paulson (remember the hologram scientist eaten by Reavers in “Serenity”?) has landed the pivotal role of the show-within-the-show’s star cast member, Harriet Hayes.

Yeah! I'm so happy Matthew Perry will be on the small screen again. I will miss him as Chandler though but I'll definetly have to watch him in this show. This puts me in a good mood. Will this be on for the fall season of '06?
