Overlay Advertising

It's bad enough that every channel on cable and I suppose Satellite TV has to have there icon down in the corner because they assume the viewers are so stupid that they don't know what channel they are watching, but now they had started something else that is even more annoying. First it started with small banners at the bottom of the screen, during the show, of an upcoming event or show. Now it has become full animated ads that take up the entire bottom 1/2 of the screen with added sound effects.

They always appear at crucial moments of the show you are watching, cover up key parts of the show, and distract with zooming, banging or whooshing sound effects. And they are always self promotion for the station. I for one am really getting sick of this. We are being bombarded by commercials now wherever we go. We get them on large TV's in the supermarkets and at the checkout lines, in buses they have now added sound to the Mobile TVs that were supposed to be silent, we get them at ATM's. And of course at the movie theater. Enough already!!!!

I don't know what we as consumers can do about this, but our world is being transformed into exactly what we saw in Blade Runner, adverts running non stop wherever we go now. We can't get away from it.

Re: Overlay Advertising

I am so glad I'm not the only one who finds this HIGHLY annoying.

And people wonder why humans as a race are "dumbing down". It's stupid schtick like that.

Re: Overlay Advertising

I don't own a Tvio so I have to ask why blame them? I have no clue as to what Tvio does. I thought it just recorded shows and allowed things on live broadcasts, like rewind, pause, etc. And I thought Tvio allowed you to skip commercials? Oh oh, I think I may have answered my own question. Is it because you can skip over commercial, or maybe even eliminate them, that the channels all think they have to advertise during a show? How stupid do they think we are anyway. Pretty stupid I guess.

Re: Overlay Advertising

Geeze I've never noticed these. Yet another reason its just as well I don't watch a lot of tv. If the advertisers keep up this kind of stuff more and more people WILL start turning off the tube and find other forms of entertainment.

Re: Overlay Advertising

Tonight I was watching "Expedition Everest" (the first of four shows on four channels about the building of the attraction at AK) and right in the middle of it they ran a huge banner over the entire bottom 1/3 of the screen telling me I was now watching "Expidition Everest"! Do they think I don't know what I am watching. Part two of this show will be on the Science Channel tomorrow night. Part 3 & 4 will run on Animal Planet and Discovery Channel, but I am not sure which part is on which channel yet. It's a good show. Tonight we followed Joe Rohde to Tibet and all the stuff he did for research for the attraction, which like everthing in AK is his, and he spent 3 months there. It was very interesting.
