Under the old Neilson rating guide what you say is true. However the sat, cable, dvd sales- etc the direct rating system is failing miseably. Tivo is altering the landscape of the television viewing audience. The numbers are not completly accurate and executives are not giving shows the time to grow that they had in previous generations. Good show get cut earlier, because studios can get cheaper reality shows.

Here is the formula:

A= Reality show made for 100k/ Y= Advertizer dollars x Ratings= Profit
B= Sitcom show made for 500k/ Y=Advertizing dollars x Ratings= Profit

So in A- if the show costs less and generates less advertizing dollars and less ratings but the profit is higher they will go with that before option B. This option was not available before the late 90's. If a show didn't perform it was given a few more episodes or replaced with a movie of the week or network broadcast of a feature film. The landscape of television is changing and not for the better and cutting edge programming is suffering as a byproduct of it. Hence why I rail against reality television programming and anyone who tells me it employs just as many people and supports creativitiy and art should meet all the unemployed writers I know.

Furthermore it must be a better than average show if Marc Cherry, the creator of Desperate Housewives made a cameo in last weeks episode and the week before that Zachary Bruff, the star of Scrubs made a cameo. All of Hollywood is clamoring to be part of this project. I had dinner with Gary Marshall about a year ago, the man who created Happy Days, Mork and Mindy, Lavrine and Shirly and an original writer on the Dick Van Dyke show- he said this was the funniest show he had seen in years. So this acclaim of this show isn't arbitrary, its deserving. Watch it and then come back and press arguments against it.

I'm not saying anything against the show. But you can't honestly argue that just because critics like the show, then that makes it good.

Yes. Yes I can honestly argue that because critics and industry elite like a show it is good. Plus we are talking about a decent number of people who like the show. An average 5-6 share isn't bad, it just doesn't make as much money. Fox doesn't care about acclaim- they are all about dollars and cents. same show on another network would have more support, more funding and more marketing for the acclaim it brings to the Network. I wished this show would have started and stayed at NBC where the executive value quality and not huge profits.

I respect your opinion. And when you mention Fox being about dollars and cents, you're right. But I would imagine if NBC had this show and it was sinking like it is now, then they wouldn't hold onto it either. NBC wouldn't throw all this money at a show that's not making much of a profit for them. IMO.

The difference is you imagine NBC would react more financially, I know they react less financially and seek more acclaim. It is the basis for what has made them the number one network for a very long time. Television production is what I know, its my thing, my area, my love and my passion. I study it, watch it, track it - Arrested Development is a phenominon. It should have been cancelled based on the forumla I provided in an earlier post but Fox listened to critics and fans. That said the ratings have not declined much if at all from last season nor risen much, but to kill it so prematurally would be in poor taste by Fox and I do believe this would be one of the rare gems some other network would pick up, embrace and it will shine.

Fox has great ideas.. but then get bad problems.. They know prime time cartoons work on sundays... byt then some other shows are put there.. (ABC countered it wit Extreme makeover home.. and i watch that instead of simpsons... untill this week of course.)

ABC & fox are learning what to do.. (remember when they put some of their sunday shows on Tuesday for a season and then dropped some of them..)

IMO Just because the critics say it's the godsend of network television doesn't make it good...this proves it. But really...it's just a show, a mediocre one at that, this show never did it for me.

I suspect that I will recieve bad rep for this...oh well.

I won't bad rep you for this but I will point out that a 5-6 share is a decent rating. So its not like the show is on the air without any viewership? It has decent to fair viewership, hell if it were on UPN, it would be a highly rated program.

How does that prove anything? You didn't lay out an argument what so ever??? You gave no evidence, no example, no proof, just a statment or an opinion.

Its not JUST good because critics say its the godsend of network television- the quality of the writing, the casting, the critical acclaim, the dvd sales and the buzz on this show do not reflect a mediocre show, the reflect a good, even a great show.

So its not your thing, thats cool but don't rail against something that doesn't do it for you. Now if it offended you (which I would be surprised by) then I would say get angry, lead a charge against the show. All these people arguing against it who never gave it a shot or never even watched it---bewilders me.

Now tell me, why would I get offended by something having to do about a television show?? I have watched many episodes, but to each his own.

Sunday's half-hour ended with scenes from the next episode, the one that would open the fall season. Devotees can only hope the optimism isn't misguided.
Surely every episode finishes with a "On The Next Arrested Development.." that's very funny, but little to do with the next ep.
Reminds me of the last episode of "Clerks The Cartoon" where the "next week on Clerks" clip is a test pattern.

Reno 911 did that...but I doubt that show will be aired again.
