Walt Disney Pictures' animated short, 'The Little Matchgirl'

Quote:
The short will also be a bonus feature on The Little Mermaid special edition DVD, which streets Oct. 3 (Buena Vista Home Ent., $29.99).

The Little Matchgirl
Quote:
Walt Disney Pictures' latest animated short, The Little Matchgirl, based on Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Girl with Matchsticks," marks the end of an era. It's the last of the shorts highlighting international music spawned by Fantasia/2000, preceded by two Oscar nominees, Destino and Lorenzo, as well as One-by-One. It's also the last of the works to utilize the Computer Animation Production System (CAPS), the first digital ink-and-paint, compositing and rendering program for traditionally animated projects, developed by The Walt Disney Co. and Pixar. Fittingly, the first use of CAPS was on an earlier Andersen adaptation, The Little Mermaid, the feature that sparked the previous renaissance at Disney.

Re: Walt Disney Pictures' animated short, 'The Little Matchgirl'

I wish they would put a series of shorts out on DVD seperate from a feature film. I suppose it wouldn't sell very well to put Lorenzo, Destino, Little Matchgirl all on a DVD and sell it like that.

At least we get to see this one. It looks stunning and it's nice to see some classic Disney 2D animation again, it has been far too long. Now when do we get Destino attached to something?

Nothing like that 2-D Disney animation. It's truly wonderful.

Italy's cartoon fest hands life award to Roy Disney

Quote:
POSITANO, Italy -- Roy Disney was awarded a lifetime achievement award at the 10th Cartoons on the Bay Festival on Thursday, which also featured the world premiere of the latest Asterix and Obelix film and the Italian premiere of the controversial Danish cartoon film "Terkel." The 76-year-old Disney was given the award for a career that started in 1954 as an assistant film editor. Disney, who produced "Fantasia 2000," the sequel to his uncle Walt Disney's 1940 classic, remains the company's director emeritus. Before receiving the award, Disney participated in a public showcase that included a rare screening of "Destino," an unlikely 1946 collaboration between Spanish surrealist painter Salvatore Dali and Walt Disney that was not completed until 2003. Disney announced that the eight-minute film, which was nominated for an Oscar in 2004, will be released along with documentary footage as a DVD later this year. (Eric J. Lyman)
