What Are Your Favorite Old Classic Movies?

My hubby and I have recently started watching movies from the 1930's - 1960's. There are some amazing movies we'd never seen, even though we were born in the 1960's!!! One of my favorites was Casablanca. LOVED IT! I have really enjoyed the Bogie & Bacall movies.

Do you have any favorites I can add to my Netflix list? (And, I am talkin' OLD movies here...not from the 80's!) ha!

Re: What Are Your Favorite Old Classic Movies?

Sunset Boulevard...a great classic.

From Here To Eternity - key role for young Sinatra.

An Affair To Remember - Cary Grant

Some Like It Hot - Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis

The Days of Wine And Roses - Lemmon and Lee Remmick ( a sad, but well-done story)

There's a few to start -

Gone With the Wind (Naturally)

A real favorite of mine - Birdman of Alcatraz - great performance by Burt Lancaster from the early 60's

The Manchurian Candidate with Sinatra and Angela Lansbury

Anything by Hitchcock if you like more psychological type horror like I do...

Brando's On The Waterfront

(Do you get Turner Classic Movies on cable? They have a tremendous selection especially of the old MGM flicks...there's also Fox Movie Channel,...)

Re: What Are Your Favorite Old Classic Movies?

I just figured out that Radio Barry is, most likely, my twin in some way. I was going to recommend my personal faves:

Casablanca "Rick, Rick...you gotta hide me, you GOTTA hide me!"

Sunset Blvd "I'm still big! It's the pictures that got small!"

Some Like it Hot "Why would a man want to marry a MAN?" "SECURITY!"

Singing in the Rain--what's interesting is that you'll put it in, and then suddenly, it's two hours later. THe movie moves like clockwork. And it does so, so fast, you won't know that the time has gone. Your butt won't get numb and you'll be humming tunes for the rest of the week!

A personal favorite is "Bringing Up Baby," with Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant. "No, I've just suddenly gone GAY!" he explains at one point. The humor is dated in that 'screwball comedies' aren't really made any more. A screwball comedy is basically a romantic comedy with lots and lots of absurdist plot elements added in. Stuff happens that couldn't possibly. But I find that, on a dark Sunday afternoon, the brevity of the picture is borderline therapeutic...if you open yourself up to the humor, it's as light as a good piece of cheesecake.

And, of course, any and all Hitchcock's films. Just be open minded, for today's movies have stolen so much from this great, it will feel a bit dated. 'Disturbia,' Shia LeBouf's new movie is a remake of Hitch's 'Rear Window.' Time it right and you can have great discussions. Another idea? Watch 'Dial M for Murder.' Then watch 'A Perfect Murder.' Compare. See which one gave you the creeps more!

Another fun thing? Watch 'The Twilight Zone' series and then watch the 80's movie. See what you think.

And let us know what you find!

Peace and popcorn,
Roo

Re: What Are Your Favorite Old Classic Movies?

There have already been some great movies listed. I won't repeat any, but I do love anything Errol Flynn and Humphrey Bogart and of course Gone With The Wind.

Yankee Doodle Dandy with James Cagney (That boy can really dance!)
Anything with James Stewart, favorites include: It's a Wonderful Life, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and The Glenn Miller Story
Dark Victory with Betty Davis (I challenge you not to cry)
Shall We Dance with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers (Actually any movie where they dance is a good movie.)
Christmas In Connecticut with Barbara Stanwyck

Don't you love Netflix? Even if the movie you picked out was not that great, you haven't really wasted any money. Enjoy! And let us know which ones you have seen.

Re: What Are Your Favorite Old Classic Movies?

I just saw this one recently -- All About Eve.
Here's some other to add to the greats already listed (BTW LOVE CASABLANCA):
Roman Holiday
Sabrina
Paris When it Sizzles (ok ok I'm a big Audrey Hepburn fan)
The Glenn Miller Story
Laura
The Shop Around the Corner
The Ghost & Mrs. Muir
Gunga Din
Sorry, Wrong Number
What Ever Happened to Baby Jane
The Harvey Girls

I used to watch TCM all the time before they switched it to digital cable --luckily now I've switch to digital so I can watch it again! Also for anyone looking for a great variety of classic movies -- Netflix has a ton of them!

The Greatest Show On Earth
The Wings of Eagles
The Bridge on the River Kwai

I love to watch almost anything with John Wayne in it. Just about any of the old classic westerns and war movies will make me stop and watch when channel surfing.
