    *Randomly jumping into the convo*

Dementia/Alzheimer's is one of the most heart-breaking disease states I've seen. Number one worst is ALS, but I think dementia might be second... It's so hard on the family. At least the patient eventually gets to a state where they don't realize how they're affecting their loved ones. The family has to watch them decline, and possibly forget who they are. It's just awful.

Basically people are living longer. The body is stronger than the brain, and people can't function because their brains don't function properly. I watched my mom deteriorate for years.

My mom was very weak. She could not care for herself, She wasn't strong enough to even walk on her own. When I would visit her, she'd always ask when she was going home. I'd tell her she'd have to get strong enough first to be able to walk by herself. She seemed to accept that. My mom was cared for very well in the nursing home. We had to put her on public aid to pay for her care. I felt very grateful at the time that that was the way it was handled. None of her children were burdened with her bills.

The important thing was that my mom was safe. SHe got good care. She always knew me and my sister when we visited her despite the Alzheimer's diagnosis.

My mom was 82 years old when she passed away, so she lived a long life. She was a good mother to her children.

It's hard to watch someone you know slip away from you. My mom wouldn't let us care for her when she was at home, she would fight with her daughters. So she had to get pretty bad, before she finally agreed to medical treatment.

I don't envy anyone going through the same type of situation that I went through with my mom.
Aw, Barbara...that is scary. Grandma's biggest problem right now is that she doesn't understand or remember her physical limitations. Today her thing was she wants to go to the Credit Union. She deposited some checks that were scheduled to post today, and she knows they went in. So she wants to go access her money. We asked her how she was going to get from the wheelchair to the truck, and she said she was sure she could do it. So we asked her if she thought she could walk, to which she replied, "yes". This was after PT, where they tried to get her to sit up straight in the wheelchair. And it took two of them holding her up to get her "standing" <--barely. She is such a strong willed and stubborn person, we are having a hard time getting her to apply her will and stubbornness to the right things. She wants to rebel and go do all these things herself, and she simply cannot. But instead of putting her energy into her exercises she is just getting frustrated and asking when she can leave. :sigh:

    I'm tired.

Anyway, that's my update for the day. May come back later and chat.

Re: RCMC #124: I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Chatting!

I'm back... what's left of me is back. I can't believe I am actually contemplating picking up extra hours after the tech that quit leaves. I printed out his schedule today, and Sunday the person that works on the schedule will be there and I'll see what I can pick up. I know that there will be one weekend... that will be 24 extra hours. Then one of the RN's today said that she could do the morning half and I could come in the second half during the week so we might do that.

I am already so freaking burned out on that place... and I totally understand why Alan quite and keeps calling in sick. But at the same time... money.... *sigh*
