Lets try more hints first. Non Disney... does this mean that its a bio of someone who has NO affiliation to Disney at all?

It's not a biography. It is not a book about Disney. The line I selected had the happy Disney reference, as does the line that follows:
"Walt came next, on December 5, 1901."
"If you don't know how to draw, you don't belong in this building" - John Lasseter 2006

Nope, as I said it is not a book about Disney. Or anyone's biography.

My initial guess before I thought Disney was that it was from One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I've only read Love in the Time of Cholera, so I don't have verification either way. Is it international fiction?

I've run out of ideas. I was convinced it was Camp or Work in Progress but neither were published in 2003.

If i could figure out the Columbus connection.......

    And, Murakami always mentions Disney.

Or, maybe it is Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code.

I edited above. The year's right. The columbus reference would match. The Disney reference is probable.......

Dan Brown - Da Vinci Code?

Found in the same book and on the same page (paperback edition) are references to Shredded Wheat, The Lincoln Memorial, Frank Lloyd Wright and L. Frank Baum.

What is the period of time between 1910 and 1920?

    Oh, we're not playing Jeopardy.
