The Recent Toy Acquisition(s) thread

Hi everyone. I figured if pins can have a recent acquistion thread, then why not toys. Post pics of any new toys you have recently acquired, whether it be a brand new toy or a vintage item. It does not have to be Disney related. It could be a plush animal, an action figure, a new model, a diecast car, whatever. However, be sure to tell us about it and where you got it from.

So I will start with my brand new Halo 3 action figures from McFarlane Toys. I love these things. I got them at Wal Mart for $9.63 a piece, easilly $2 cheaper than elsewhere.

I picked up Cortana, a Grunt, a Jackal Sniper and a Brute Cheiftain. The 3 aliens are very articulated with at least 20 points of articulation. Cortana, unfortunately has none, but her stand lights up with 2 AAA batteries.

here is Cortana all lit up.

Unfortunately, this does not show all her paint aps very well. You can see them better in the group shot below.

Thanks. I figure that you and I will be doing the lion's share of the posting. I don't think I am much better than you as far as collecting goes.

McFarlane Toys has always been great when it comes to paint application. They also have great sculptors. Articulation is usually a weak point, but the Halo figures got it in spades. I've been collecting their toys since the first wave of Spawn figures they put out.

Re: The Recent Toy Acquistion(s) thread

Here is some new additions to my massive Star Wars collection.

First Commander Gree and a Kashyyyk trooper from Episode III.

The rest are from the upcoming video game The Force Unleashed.

I love this beaten up Darth Vader. You can tell he had a rough battle.

You can remove pieces of his armor.

Re: The Recent Toy Acquistion(s) thread

Awesome score, Mellon! But why is the Kashyyk trooper so small compared to Gree? Grrr, Hasbro!

Darth Vader is pretty cool and fun for play, I imagine. But do you think they're going a little TOO nuts on Expanded Universe? Is there that strong of an audience to buy all of these?

What is too nuts? Let's look at the wave breakdown for the 30th anniversary collection.

wave 1 was a Revenge of the Sith wave
wave 2 and 3 were both from A New Hope
wave 4 was a combo of A New Hope and Return of the Jedi
wave 5 was another combo with some ROTJ and expanded universe in it.
wave 6 was Empire Strikes Back
Wave 7 was Return of the Jedi
Wave 8 was Attack of the Clones
Wave 7.5 was a combo of figures from accross the films and expanded universe.
Wave 1 2008 was Revenge of the Sith
Wave 2 was expanded universe The Force Unleashed

But this is not really telling. Let's look at the figure/film breakdown. I am leaving the McQuarrie Figures out of this. I don't consider them EU, but they aren't really canon either. I will include the vintage line though, and leave out Saga Legends and Multipacks.

ANH 12
ESB 10
ROTJ 10
TPM 3
AOTC 5
ROTS 16
EU 17

So obviously, there were more EU figures than any one film, but the films had 56 figures to the EUs 17, so basically EU was 23% of the line. What really got screwed over was the Phantom Menace, with 3 figures and only 4% of the line.

As far as a strong audience for expanded universe goes, I think it is there. The hardest figures for me to find last year were (Besides the McQuarrie Storm Trooper which I saw a total of 1 on the shelf) were Darth Revan, Darth Malak, and the Pre-cyborg Grevious. I saw Revan and Grevious only twice, Malak 3 times. I saw all the other figures inlcuding the rest of the McQuarries many more times. Right now what is sitting on the shelves in my area are clone troopers (film based and EU), some torture rack Hans and wave 8 figures.

When it comes right down to it a good unique figure is a cool figure, no matter the source. IMHO Hasbro has gone too nuts with the clone troopers. There are so many different ones and they just sit and sit and sit on the pegs. I am certain they sell, but there are so many.

here is another thought, is the Clone Wars Animated series going to be considered EU or canon? It is produced by Lucas and is getting a theatrical release. hmmm

edit: forgot to include the vintage figures. I corrected the numbers to reflect that.

Re: The Recent Toy Acquistion(s) thread

The figures like Yoda on his steed and other Clone Wars characters done realistically I think are considered Expanded Universe. Basically it is anything that isn't part of the live action saga.

It's just that it feels like they're really pouring it on heavier than usual. Just wondering if they're overdoing it. Oh well... it'll save me some money anyway!

Re: The Recent Toy Acquistion(s) thread

I think that they have kind of hit a wall with the canon films. They have done most of the characters in just about every costume. They could resculpt many, and there are always background characters to do, but still many characters have got "Malibu Stacy" disease. You know, the same figure but with a new accessory. Look at the Han and Luke from wave 2 for example.

One thing that the EU does is it allows for new versions of old characters like the Battle Damaged Vader or the Yoda with Kybuck. I'd much rather have the Yoda w/ Kybuck than another Yoda with a cooking pot.

Here is a good question. Would you rather have an important EU character, like say a Yuuzhan Vong warrior or a background human character from the movies, like Willrow Hood (who was recently revealed in a QnA to be coming)?

In my case I'd rather have a cool looking alien vs a boring background human. That's not to say I won't by Hood, but I'll probably wait for a sale. I imagine he will peg warm.

Now a Yuuzhan Vong warrior vs a neat background alien from Jabba's Palace or the Cantina, I'd probably go for the movie character.

Ultimately, I guess what I am saying is that I like cool figures, regardless of their source.

Re: The Recent Toy Acquistion(s) thread

I actually don't mind realistic versions of the clone wars animated figures. Since those characters were meant to interact with the main character ark in between the films, I enjoy those (such as the yoda on the steed, etc). What I'm not a fan of is all the random comic 2packs with characters I care nothing about. Though the films have hit a wall, I think there's other ways to go about it. This would have been good a few years ago but I think they're overdoing it now.

But anyway, I finally took some pictures of my toys so here they are!

Here's the Mustafar Mining Droid with Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi

In the center is the 2-1B Surgical Droid

New Senator Pu Nudo

Cars

I just realized. You did not post any pics of the Tri-Droid. I imagine you'll be busy with the new stuff you should be getting today or tomorrow.

Haha, the hard part is that i only take pictures on the weekends when I have time. So even though I have everything, nothing gets opened until then. It can get backed up!

So yes, there's a LOT to be posted!!!

Here's Torpedo (new one on the right, vintage on the left)

Rock'n'Roll

Battle Armor Cobra Commander

Flash

Destro

Snow Job

That's all for now!
