Moms I've got a birthday question for ya!!!

I just had a revelation in my ramblings in micespace now I need some opinions.

So Shawn's bday is friday we are going to go to my dads house in Fremont, have a bday dinner with him, my stepmom & grandpa and spend the night. Then we're going to Stockton to see my mom, stepdad & little brother plus my brother & cynthia for pizza for bday lunch & then stop by the inlaws(then it'll be time for a mini DMCA meet )and he'll get to play with his friends in Stockton. So obviously he'll have presents to open.

So instead of rushing out to buy his presents tomorrow I"m thinking I'll take him to Toys R Us and give him the cash that I would've spent, not telling him of course, walk in, hand him the cash and say "go pick out whatever you want"(within the limits of the cash he has) Whaddya think??

After Kyler's bootay kicking birthday surprise I wanted to make sure and do something great for him(that's why we're going to visit his friends that's what HE asked to do) I'm thinking if this goes good I'll just skip having a "party" for him the following weekend and just have his 3 friends from school over.

That sounds like a great idea. I know that my brothers, while always grateful for anything they get, always have something on their list that they didn't receive. Our tradition, which has worked out well for us, is that on someone's birthday, we take them to the mall and they get to pick out anything (within reason) that they really want and we all pitch in to get that gift for them. That way, that person has a gift that is "just what they wanted" and the whole family gets to say they helped get it for him/her. I think your toys'r'us idea is along the same lines, so I'd say go for it!

I often did that with my daughter...and she would sometimes decide to save the money toward something larger!! Great idea...and teaches them how to spend their money wisely!!

I know my kids love to spend money themselves. Of course, Bailey usually can spend his in under 2 mintues...Kat takes HOURS!

I think it's a great idea...less stress for you!!!

I "talked" Kat into a trampoline for her bday this year...it's a week before Christmas. She wants to have a slumber party..so we "talked" it over...trampoline is her only gift from us...and she can get it a day early in time for her party!

Whoo hooo! I'm getting off easy....of course if you call having 8-10 8/9 year old giggly girls over night in your home easy....well.....

Great idea! My MIL gives the girls $100 for every birthday and they go shop. I told my Mom this year to give them gift cards, something about those makes them feel so grown up like they have their own credit card, they love it. The only problem is that we then spend an hour going up each and every isle, picking something out, putting it back for something else... etc etc.

I am thinking a scavenger hunt might be in order and each clue leads to $10, 7 of them(since he's turning 7) and the last clue will have the $10 with my car keys so we can go or I'll do it right before we go to eat and after we eat I'll just pull up at TRU, still deciding. I think he's going to like it!

Sounds great! My girls love to shop for themselves. They feel so grown up! And don't you find that sometimes you buy things just because they're on sale, or just so they have something to open?? This eliminates all that "extra" BS type gifts that we parents buy for no good reason. He gets only what he wants and you aren't wasting money on the "filler" gifts!

He'll love it! And he'll always remember the scavenger hunt!
