    Friends-

Does anyone else ever find this word is overused. I have found that there are too many people in my life whom I have called "friends" who have ended up acting like and being anything BUT!

I'm a little disheartened by it- I think my tendency to be positive and hopeful set me up for HUGE falls.

I have a lot of acquaintances. The word "Friends" seems to connote too many expectations, so I reserve it for the few. Expectations are one quick way of developing resentments.

Many years ago I had a professor tell me that he thought the word "friend" was used far too freely. His observations had convinced him that a person usually has about 5 truly close people around them that could be called a friend. All the rest were really acquaintances. Through death, moving away or a parting of the ways a person will begin a subconcious quest to replace that person.

I've watched this from my personal viewpoint for several decades and found it to be true.

It's not even expectations with me, at least not that I am aware of, perhaps subconsciously- it's just such an overused term. I am learning to use it less-

Same as the words love and hate- I use those very sparingly, I did not expect to add "friend" to that list- but there it is.

Eh, it's a personal choice. You do what you feel comfortable with. If you feel you overuse the tem, then stop using it so freely. It's cool because it is a "choice" word. You can choose to use it or no and you can also define it's meaning.

    True.

Time is past for me to stop using it for some people.

YOU- are a true friend. In fact you are an example of what a friend should be. We make an effort- keeping in touch, visiting each other- we listen to each other, when we rant, when we are angry, when we just need someone to hear us...you and I are that kind of friends. I love you- you know that!

You deserve the title of friend....but others are not so deserving.

    Hmmm..... in that case......

Remember that friends help you move, but real friends help you move bodies.

Glad I can be a real friend. Now, who's the undeserving nitwits? And will I need a shovel or backhoe?

I am sorry Nephythys that something seems to happened that made you a bit bitter towards the term 'friends'. Hopefully you don't stop being positive. It is a good way to be even if you are feeling a bit "not in the mood" at the moment

Oh I won't stop being positive- I just need to be more selective on whom I bestow the appellation of friend.

I'm really ok- I was just pondering it.

Remember, a backhoe only digs down 24 feet or so. To REALLY hide the doby you will need to climb down and dig another 2 or 3 feet. No cop in the world will do such a thing to find a body, so you should be safe.

Yes. I think the word friend is used far too easily and generically thes days.

That's why my close friends are "my girls" or my "Westsiders"
My friends are people I know, see, hang out with on ocassion. My girls are the ones who are there for me 24/7 who I can count on and always laugh with. More than just an everyday friend.

    *2 cents*
    Good morning, son
    In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
    It was pain
    Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...

I think there is certainly a difference between people I know, and people I consider friends.

I know a lot of people. I only have a few friends.
