New York City is trying to stop the use of Baby Bottles

First they moved against smoking, and then trans fats. Now, city health officials are taking on the bottle -- as in a baby's bottle.

On Tuesday they announced a new campaign to promote breastfeeding instead of using formula.

Baby bottles beware. City hospitals don't want you around. Instead, they want infants to eat at Mom's instead.

"We're producing it. Why not give it to the baby," new mother Mashia Nelson said.

The push toward breastfeeding means a ban on freebie formula when you leave the hospital.

"It was just the diaper bag and formula information and formula and we don't do that here anymore," Nelson said.

I was born 12 weeks early and never, NEVER was able to breast feed. What's up with the babies like that? Too bad, we're sorry?

That does sound ridiculous. Even the mothers who pump because they're working or whatever circumstance. They can't use an already prepared bottle filled with breast milk because of this ludicrous new law?

Looks like I won't go to NYC whenever I have small children.

don't see anything wrong with it. all it says is they are to stop promoting formula feeding, nothing about making it illegal. you have a choice, the hospital just wants you to breastfeed for the childs health.

As a mom who proudly breastfed both of my girls, I have to say that this is just wrong! I chose to breastfeed but I wouldn't want that choice of either to or not to, taken away from anyone else. Not everyone can breatsfeed. Geez! What man came up with this grand plan...because I can't beleive any knowlegable woman wouldn't realize the flaw in this plan.

I didn't read it that way. I just saw that they implemented a policy of not selling formula in hospitals. They haven't outlawed using bottles. They are simply trying to make it less convenient to use them, in an effort to alter the behavior of mothers who might otherwise choose to bottlefeed rather than breastfeed.

You still have the choice.

As a mom who breastfed in the beginning - I still took some of these bottles home. They were great when you needed them in a flash.

But that doesn't work for babies like I me. It was too late to use breast milk by the time I was "free of the tubes" so to speak. I had to stay on formula. So moms of babies like this don't get any help, huh?

Well- I don't think it was ever something where they have to give away free formula. They do it as a service- sort of like a gift on the way home which they are thinking of doing away with. While the baby is in the hospital, yeah, I would imagine they will feed the baby.

I don't see it as a big deal since you have to have formula for the baby anyway and the 6-pack they supply you on the way home doesn't last anyway. You still have to buy formula.

ummmmm yeah breast feeding is the best, but when you can not do it ( I was in intensive care for 12 days, so was my baby ) and no milk came in when I could finally do it, then the bottles really are a blessing for the first day or so when your to tired, sick or what ever to hit the store to get formula. There is several reasons to have bottles on hand.

Honestly it just says they are not giving out the free "take home" formula anymore. I doubt they would stop having it on hand for babies/mommies that choose or need it while they are staying at the hospital.

You can still get free formula by going to the websites of the makers and signing up on their sites. They mail it to your house. I really don't see this as a big deal.

Both my sons were bottle fed because they couldn't nurse. So I'm not against formula at all.

ETA: The free formula/diaper bag they are talking about not giving out anymore can most times be picked up at your OB/GYN's office too. So new NY mommies may still be able to get that deal.
