![]() | Re: 8/29: Aurora Awakes The previous release was in 2003 and was sold to us as a COMPLETE restoration. So short of the blu-ray part I can see no real reason to purchase another. Especially since Disney is lying to customers to sell it. I have gone to the Disney Stores in 2 cities and it is being sold as it hasn't been released for 7 years and is back from the "vault". Second, it is being touted as the first complete restoration of SB since it's release. Since Disney seems not to notice those of us who have purchased this Platinum version and I guess thinks we have no memories, this is becoming a Disney rip-off promotion. The El Cap show may be great but I am disappointed in Disney and it's marketing. With so many other movies to work on, why a redo of SB so soon? |

![]() | Re: 8/29: Aurora Awakes ^^^ I've been saying that for weeks! Your right, there are many other films that could have come first. I don't care for much of the marketing of the films as of late. "For the first time as a double DVD Platinum Edition!" is a common term when the film has already been released once (or twice) |

The Black Cauldron was photographed in Super Technirama 70. For those who don't know, Technirama and Super Technirama 70 are actually the same exact photographic process. Like VistaVision, Technirama runs 35mm film horizontally throught the camera to create a larger image area. Technirama however adds a slight animorphic squeeze (not unlike CinemaScope) to widen the asepect ratio from 1.85:1 to between 2.21:1 and 2.35:1 depending on if the release prints were 35mm or 70mm. This makes it compatable with both CinemaScope and the Todd-AO 70mm format. Also note that Technirama was never projected in the United States in its native format. It was always intended to be a photographic process only and printed to 35mm as a way to improve the quality of release prints over CinemaScope. Sleeping Beauty was the first film photographed in Technirama and printed to 70mm for release. After the release of Sleeping Beauty, films that were released in 35mm were advertised as being in Technirama, and films released in 70mm were advertised as being in Super Technirama 70. I hope this wasn't utterly boring for anyone, however if anyone else is interested there is a very great website that goes into widescreen and large format film processes. The Disney marketing department doesn't seem to fully understand this process as marketing rarely does. The previous DVD release was done from a 35mm answer print of Sleeping Beauty. This new release was done from the original Technirama camera negatives, and is the first time that the original source materials have been used for a home video release of this film. Not to mention the fact that the original sound elements have been used for the first time. At the time of the previous DVD release, there were no high quality large format telecine machines available. They probably felt they would get the best results from using a standard 35mm print. Today that has changed and a high quality scan of the Technirama negative is now possible. In addition Sleeping Beauty was actually photographed on B&W film as most Technicolor films of that day were, but in this case each frame was photographed 3 times on the same strip of film. Once with a Red filter, once with Green and once with Blue. These three frames would then be combined in the Technicolor printing process to create a final color print. Today with the use of computers, these three frames can be combined with much greater accuracy than ever before. This means that this version of the film will probably be sharper than even the original release in 1959. This release should be a substantial improvement on the last DVD version. I suspect this film was chosen because, being a large format film it will particularly shine in High Definition. Other films, though they will look better than ever in HD, won't have quite the "pop" that Sleeping Beauty does. They want to put their best foot forward with the first of their classic animated films on blu-ray. Doug

Basicly what that means is that a 2K projector can display a far greater range of color tones than blu-ray can, and has much less potention for the display of digital artifacts. Doug

![]() | Re: 8/29: Aurora Awakes So basically the new release is being sold to purists and completists like me? NICE. Has anyone noticed the print adds? There strikingly contempory looking.
