According to Mingpao News, 3 New Themed Lands have been proposed by Walt Disney Co. to Hong Kong Government. They haven't reached an agreement yet. If an agreement is reached sometime in early 2009, construction will start in 2009 and various new attractions will debut in 2011 onwards.

I hope this time this is real because not only does HKDL needs the expansion, HK workers need the jobs, too. It is always good to do construction when economy is down, because materials and labour are cheaper.

The park... ...criticized as too small and lacking in some of the staple attractions of Disney theme parks elsewhere, notably 'Pirates of the Caribbean' and 'Haunted House.'

A step in the right direction, no doubt, if it pans out. Though $645 million is not that large an amount by Disney standards, especially when spread over three lands that have to built from scratch...

Sure, it's much less that DCA will get but I guess its all relative to the park and its needs.

This is true but money goes a lot further in China than the states. Also Disney would most likely put out bids for the large expansion and since it would all be built simultanously construction crews can be timed to work on diferent projects. that amount of money could signifcantly add quite a few attractions to the park.

also if you consider that supposedly the whole resort was built for 14.1 bln hkd which is about 1.7billion, then the the 645 million is more then a third of what the whole resort and infrustructure cost to build.
That means that the park is getting a significant investment just for those lands

Thanks for putting that into perspective. So it is quite a reasonable sum to improve things.

That's what DCA cost when it opened in 2001. Disneyland's Second Gate cost 650 million dollars for a whole new park with over 20 attractions. HKDL will be getting that much for just three additional lands. Sound great to me from that perspective.

I doubt they're proposing to build three new lands at once, but rather there are proposals for three new lands and one might get built. They still need to plus the few lands they have by adding a couple of classic dark rides to Fantasyland and a marquee ride to Adventureland.

Does anyone know which 3 theme lands they are planning to build?
