Fewer Chinese and Foreign visitors to HKDL
HKDL has accumulated 1.45 million visitors since it opened in Sept 2005. It recorded 15% growth even with the last few, financial tsunami affected months. One of the reasons is the annual pass which allows HK people to enter the park more frequently. But mainland Chinese and foreign visitors have decreased significantly. HK govt also stated that it is still in negotiation with WDC about expansion but no agreement has been reached.
Expansion plan not yet agreed
Attendance figure in the last year has grown 8% from the year before. Local visitors have gone up from 31% to 40%. But mainland visitors have gone down from 39% to 34%, foreigners also gone down from 30% to 26%. Both HK govt and HKDL are unwilling to disclose actual attendance and financial figures. But it is estimated that HKDL is still making a loss.
HK govt is in negotiation with WDC about expansion. HK govt admitted for the first time that the expansion will involve a capital re-adjustment, it will consider the investment returns during negotiation; the financial feasibilities on expansion; increase in overseas tourists and the added job opportunities' benefits on local economy. HK govt plans to open a new Tourism Assistant position for nine months to mainly work on the negotiation.
