Re: HKDL Expansion concept art!!!

Well, the Grizzly Trail and Mystic Point look great. Toy Story Land just craps. It's just a waste of land.

(off-topic) I've been wondering this myself! They sell the Boardwalk Barker plush Potato Head, but an actual Mr. Potato Head with custom accessories seems like a no-brainer for me.

Back on topic, I'm most excited about Mystic Manor. I think the trackless system has a lot of potential. And I don't think that intimacy has to suffer necessarily (as someone cautioned). I think that cars could basically run in line like the doombuggies up until you reached large spaces like a ballroom or conservatory or something and they they could spread out and move more organically. As long as it's highly themed with a well developed story line, I'm happy.

My dad has traveled to Hong Kong frequently in the last five years and offered to take me. I've never felt the pull to go and check out Hong Kong Disneyland, but these changes are making me re-think things...

(Also, while I think that Toy Story Land is a poor and limited concept for a land, I think it can succeed if the detail is there. I for one like A Bugs Land. However, I really hope they expand the "Toy Land" concept and try to encorporate other "toy characters". Maybe little nods to the tin soldier sequence from Fantasia 2000 or something like that... Again, I wish they would select a broad theme rather than merely a movie for a land concept.

Re: HKDL Expansion concept art!!!

The very original plan only consists of 3 lands, Grizzly Trail, Mystic Point and Piratesland. Unfortunately the HK Government didn't like the pirates (poor pirates...). Then Disney gave out the Glacier Bay plan (which will feature a replica of Everest). But the HK Government also banned the idea of Glacier Bay because they thought it wasn't suitable for the Hong Kong or even the Asia market.

Disney has designed many attractions for the Hong Kong park but many of them were not accepted by HK. Disney wanted HK to pay money for designing things but HK said NO until they approve the plans. Few months ago HK send a representative to negotiate with Jay Rasulo (remember?). You know what? The Toy Story Land idea was maybe given by Rasulo.

Presenting Toy Story Land must have been a last way out of negotiations that did not go as well as they had hoped.
It is a shame that they chose the cheap way once again.

Re: HKDL Expansion concept art!!!

I still don't get why there is no direct route from the existing area of the park to Mystic Point. That whole back area should be all "mystic/grizzly" and put the Toy Story somewhere else so it attaches to Fantasyland like Toontown. Maybe behind the train station/small world. From the satellite image it does look like there is room there. I'm not sure how recent that image is, but still.

I don't have an issue with the Toy Story land per se', it could be HKDL's toontown, it's fine. But it should attach more to Fantasyland than Adventureland.

Yeah, it is a little surprising they don't have the actual Mr. Potato Head Barker parts for sale.

Your comment about the trackless ride system in "Mystic Manor" made sense, and made me wonder if they will do something like that. Especially for the ballroom sequence. In all other mansions, the ghostly ball takes place as you watch it to one side. Well, what if in "Mystic Manor", you actually take part in the ball, and your vehicle "dances" amongst the ghosts? That would be pretty cool if you ask me, and set it above the other incarnations. You could also weave in and out of the graveyard scene and it would open it up to more than just a linear move along a track, without losing the intimacy. Another aspect, like Hunny Hunt, is that each car might see something different as it veers off in another direction. So, there is ride repeatability to try to see everything.

Thumbs up Re: HKDL Expansion concept art!!!

I think it all sounds VERY interesting- the expansion (especially the Mystic Manor)! I'm just sad that it's going to be on the other side of the planet. Well, I guess that means I need to: 1) win the lotto, 2) get a sugar daddy or 3) inherit some big bucks, so I can pay visit to this (and TDL, TDS and DLP)!!!

Re: HKDL Expansion concept art!!!

Basically, I'm agreeing w/ the consensus (Grizzly, Mystic: promising, Toy Story: "what were they thinking?!?")

But the caveats are many:

* we don't know what happened in the negotiations. Having been in several business/govt negotiations, it really is a give and take and I can easily see some of the scenarios that have been pointed out so far in this thread.

* I've also heard of the rumor for Pirates Land and its location (which is exactly where this is). So there's definitely some evidence for it having it been canceled by someone. (Prime suspect HK govt). OTOH, PoC hype has subsided since when this suggestion/rumor hit the streets.

* Since TS3 is coming out, I think the marketers reasoned that this land could ride its popularity (esp in Asia where release lags US).

Still I'm shocked that a new TS based land (which could work if done correctly; for ex, lower the grade so that it can be more easily hidden by foliage from the Jungle Cruise) doesn't have a Mania. Also I agree that its location is weird...

Anyway, sorry for my ramblings...

Don't know for sure since googling box office #s brought up only foreign totals for both movies...

However, going off of anecdotal info from folks in/from HK that I know, they were both very big in HK. For mainland, I have no idea.
