I'd rather have the birthday merchandise as opposed to all of the yearly merchandise like all the 2007, 2008 and 2009 stuff that winds up at clearance prices in the outlets for the following year.

To me, that makes me feel dated, rather than celebrating a new milestone each year.
Yes, this is how I feel about the anniversary merchandise. The fact that WDW and DL crank out merchandise with the year on it says to me that even people here are buying it. So...why not just switch it and create yearly anniversary stuff instead? Like you said, Jedimaster, it's different when you're celebrating a certain date, instead of the year you visited. I bought a couple things when I went to WDW and DL in 2000, and have no reason to wear them in 2009. The DL 50th stuff, on the other hand...

Besides, what TDLFAN showed us with these pictures is just a small selection. HKDL, and TDR don't plaster this stuff all over the resort in every store. There is only a limited quantity of it released around any actual anniversary. None of it is available all year long. So, this stuff is in very small supply compared to the rest of the merchandise. It's not like they're celebrating every single little thing...just once a year near the actual date. I don't see a problem with it, and obviously they keep doing it so people are buying it.

The one thing I think is interesting is that HKDL is run by Disney itself, but is taking a cue from the way TDR does it's merchandising...too bad that doesn't bleed over into the other Disney resorts around the world. I'm sure people, especially at Disneyland, would go crazy for stuff like this. Just look what happens when there is any kind of special event at Disneyland.

Actually, one of the things I have vigorously complained about TDR lately is how they are following WDC's directives and plastering the same merchandise in every freaking store in the parks and the hotels.. regardless of theming. HKDL in particualr has been guilty of this since day 1 in 2005.

Actually, you are partly correct. Selection is minimal but can be found in several stores all over. However, some things you will not find at the other park.. for example, you will find TDL's Halloween merchandise all over in TDL's shops, the hotels and Bon Voyage, but NOT at TDS. Likewise TDS' Turtle Talk, 8th anniversary and Halloween masquerade merchandise is found in most shops at TDS, the hotels and Bon Voyage but NOT at TDL.

Actually TDR does market everything they do and usually try to at least create special menus for every single reason they have to celebrate anything at the resort.. be it an anniverary, a grand opening, a national holiday, of Disney milestone that somehow is connected to the parks' line up.

True but HKDL is also guilty of selling a lot of the same crap they sell at the american and parisian parks, with about 40 % of it being unqiue to them, which is a high number and a positive thing IMHO. Yet, look closely and you will still find a lot of leftover merchandise from the previous anniversaries and other fesative ocasions. Pins for example, and some teeshirts or edibles are a prime example of this "overstocking" that is so popular in our US resorts.

Re: 4th anniversary merchandise

I still say the Asian parks have the best merchandise. Love the HK 4th selection!

Re: 4th anniversary merchandise

Right now the 4th anniversary merchandise does seem a little silly but if the park becomes something special to the people of Hong Kong and Disney Park fans, when the park reaches a real milestone like it's 50th anniversary, it will be cool to have a momento from all 50 anniversaries, not just the 50th. I can remember during Disneyland's 50th how much people wanted stuff from the past.

Re: 4th anniversary merchandise

You don't consider its upcoming 5th year a "real" milestone?
