What happened to the idea of refurbishing the Body Wars vehicles from Epcot and shipping them to HKDL for their Star Tours? Are you telling me that there isn't sufficient awareness of the Star Wars canon in HK and the larger region?

ORDDU: From what we have read, the HK government does not want a Star Tours attraction in the park there. No reasons were given. But a witch would think it could work just fine if they had a Star Tours in Tomorrowland.

^^ Build more hotels and more tourists will come? Especially with a big city a few miles away? Sounds reminiscent of DLP circa 1992 logic.

According to this report, HKDL and HK govt's negotiations are close to being finalized and HKDL will build a new ride that's attractive to kidults. A new hotel will also be built.

HKDL is full of tourists during holiday periods.

    Additional info:
As is the norm, the big question is about funding. HKDL maybe able to afford the new ride using profits from the past year and future years, but the new hotel must be paid for by new funds, either by new investments or bank loans. It is a problem that HK govt finds hard to resolve, because if it invests it will be hard to get through LegCo but if it doesn't then it will become a minority shareholder and benefit less from the profits in the future.

WDC is willing to invest. WDC has noticed the competition (namely Universal Studios Singapore) and proposed expansion plans in the last year. But HK govt was not keen during Donald Tsang's administration.

Another source said it is really hard to build new tourism projects in Hong Kong as land is scarce. So the best way forward for tourism development is to expand HKDL which has land available. As long as tourists feel that there is something new and fun they will return.

Legislator Yao is supportive of expansion as HKDL is small and needs expansion to remain competitive. But he wants to see medium to long term return on investments projections and its benefits to Hong Kong tourism industry as a whole. Another legislator Tse is open to expansion plans but he wants to see if there is enough supportive evidence for it.

Re: HKDL to release proposal for the design of further expansion

My understanding now is that HKDL will finance the park expansion on its own, but will require govt investment to build the third hotel.

The situation is that Hong Kong, as a whole, lacks hotels and the HK govt investing in a hotel will receive less resistance from the legislators. As Ocean Park is building two hotels, why can't HKDL also build more hotels to accommodate the throngs of mainland tourists?

Re: HKDL to release proposal for the design of further expansion

According to another local newspaper, MingPao News, WDC has chosen the plot of vacant land by the ocean (in between existing two hotels) to build the third hotel. More details will be released when the new chief executive of HK SAR government give out his policy address early next year.

Not sure if HK government will put forward the plan of building another theme park in Tung Chung. But according to local news, Standard news back in June, titled "Tung Chung 'Park' on Way", the new theme park has been included in the development plan of Tung Chung. unless the new administration of HK SAR Government has changed it's mind, we might see a new theme park at Tung Chung in the future?

Re: HKDL to release proposal for the design of further expansion

Ove Arup & Partners HK Ltd was awarded the consultancy contract for planning and engineering studies on the remaining development in Tung Chung. The project began 30th Jan 2012, with 30 months to complete.

    http://www.epd.gov.hk/eia/chi/regist...51/cesb251.pdf (in Chinese only)

the document includes the possible development of a theme park (40 hectare)

i wonder if this is anything to do with a future theme park (run by another operator ?)

    http://www.epd.gov.hk/eia/register/p...251/esb251.pdf (English Version)

    [Quote]
Adjoining the tentative potential new town development extension area at Tung Chung East there lies a possible site of about 40 ha for a theme park/major recreational uses for long term planning purpose as indicated on the Revised Concept Plan. This Project would however only include the reclamation for the possible theme park/major recreational uses. The construction and operation of the possible theme park/major recreational uses would be done by other project proponents. Hence, the future operator would need to apply for the respective EP under the EIAO. However, the Study will assess in broad terms the nature and technical feasibility of the possible theme park/major recreational uses and their compatibility/interface with developments in the vicinity. The environmental and technical feasibility of reclaiming this possible site together with the tentative potential New Town extension area at Tung Chung East in one go will also be examined in the Study as a separate scenario.

lets refresh our memory with another news dated 19th June 2012:-

HK gov to increase the population of Tung Chung to 220,000 which is double the existing population, and to reserve a plot of vacant land for the future development of a theme Park.
    ....
    ......
It is estimated by the HK Gov, the consultancy study will take 30 months, to be completed sometime in 2014. Once the Project for Tung Chung Town expansion is approved, construction work might begin at 2017 and housing work to start in 2020.

I think all future Disney properties should be solely owned by the Walt Disney Company OR jointly operated by another recreational management team (see Resort World and OLC), but when the government gets involved, things tend to suck (Paris & Hong Kong)
