Is HK Gov planning for a 3rd Theme Park ?

HK government has awarded the consultancy contract to Ave Arup & Partners HK Ltd for Tung Chung New Town Development extension. This is a planning and engineering study on the remaining development of Tung Chung Town. They plan to create 285 hectare of land for the new town extension (120 hectare from reclamation) and 40 hectare would be used for Theme Park/Major Recreational Uses.

    http://www.epd.gov.hk/eia/register/p...251/esb251.pdf

the consultancy project begin in Jan 2012, 30 months to complete.

If they agree to further extend Tung Chung town, they would start work in 2017. Housing work in 2020.

40 hectare of new vacant land (Theme Park/Major Recreational Use) in 2020?

if HK Gov determine to build another theme park at Tung Chung East (this would be the third location after HKOP on HK Island, HKDL Resort at Penny's Bay, for a theme park or resort), would it be a Movies Theme Park?

The theme park business is a very tough business. You need to continually create new elements to bring people back. Also HK govt is all about building new housing today. I doubt there would be a third (or fourth if you count Noah's Ark) player in the HK theme park market.

It is more likely for Macau to build a theme park. It is their stated wish.

I wonder if something will go there like a regular city park. It's not too big to fit a full size theme park but maybe a water park or some sort of sport complex.

Unless there was a wealthy private investor, this would never happen.

For the sake of comparison, 40 hectares is not too small. Universal Studios Singapore is 20 hectares, which is part of Resort World Sentosa (49 hectares)

according to Forbes, Hollywood Studios such as MGM, Paramount are scouting around Asia for future Projects....

Deputy Secretary for Housing, Planning and Lands

    Ms. Ernestina Wong
Principal Assistant Secretary for the Environment,
    Transport and Works

    Ms. Judy Chung

    Ms. Phyllis Li
    District Planning Officer/Lantau & Islands,
    Planning Department

    Mr. C H Wong
    Senior Engineer, Transport Department

    Number of participants: about 100

    Opening Remarks

    1. The Chairman welcomed all attendees for taking part in the public forum. He said that the Lantau Development Task Force (Task Force) led by the Financial Secretary was formed in February 2004 to provide a policy steer on the development of Lantau. The Concept Plan for Lantau (Concept Plan) was prepared to provide an overall planning framework for Lantau. A 3-month public consultation on the Concept Plan had been launched from late November 2004 with briefing sessions and forums arranged for the general public, local communities and stakeholders of various sectors to discuss and exchange views on the proposals. He encouraged attendees to provide comments and suggestions on the Concept Plan so that the plan could be reviewed, taking into account the views of the various sectors of the community.

Introduction of the Concept Plan for Lantau

    2. Ms. Phyllis Li gave a PowerPoint presentation on the Concept Plan.

    3. Mr. Thomas Tso supplemented that with the development of the Hong Kong International Airport, Tung Chung New Town, the strategic transport links, Hong Kong Disneyland (HKD) and Tung Chung Cable Car, Lantau was subject to immense development pressure. He said that the Task Force in drawing up the Concept Plan for Lantau aimed at balancing economic development and conservation needs. In order to let the public have a comprehensive overview of Lantau, he said that some already planned projects had been included, but most of the proposals contained in the Concept Plan were conceptual and would be reviewed taking into account comments from the public.

LCQ12: Third theme park in Hong Kong
    ************************************
Following is the question by the Hon Fred Li and a written reply by the Secretary for Economic Development and Labour, Mr Stephen Ip, in the Legislative Council today (January 18):

It has been reported that, when attending a radio programme early last month, the Secretary for Economic Development and Labour did not deny that the Government was discussing with the relevant parties the construction of a new theme park in Hong Kong. In this connection, will the Government inform this Council:

    (a) of the details of the discussions, including the commencement date of the discussions and the government departments involved;

    (b) of the preliminary proposal on the new theme park, including the locations as well as the modes of construction and operation that have been considered or are being considered, and whether the Government plans to inject funds into the project; and

    (c) given that the Ocean Park will carry out a $5.5 billion redevelopment project and Hong Kong Disneyland also plans to develop more amusement facilities, whether it has studied the viability of the new theme park; if so, of the findings of the study; if not, the reasons for that?

    Reply:
    Madam President,

To maintain and enhance Hong Kong's attractiveness to tourists, the Government will continue to develop new tourist attractions. We will not rule out the possibility of developing a third theme park at an appropriate time in the future. However, at the moment we do not have any concrete plan and we are not engaged in any discussion with any parties on the construction of a new theme park.
At present, our priority is to ensure the smooth operation of the Hong Kong Disneyland and the enhancement of its facilities as well as the implementation of the Ocean Park Redevelopment Project.
