New MTR South East Island Line to Linkup Ocean Park and HKDL?

The Hong Kong Legislative Council has passed the motion to urge the HK Government to build the MTR South Island Line (South East Line) by 2010 or 2012 to make Ocean Park more accessible and to ease traffic. The South Island has been split into 2 lines, South East Line and South West Line due to the overall construction cost and urgency. If this New MTR South East Island Line gets built, Ocean Park would get its own specially designed train station and it would connect HKDL and Ocean Park by the MTR (Mass Transit Rail).

No decision has been reached. The secretary for environment, transport and public works said the cost of building the MTR South East Island line is very expensive(over HK$7 billion), they are waiting for the studies from Planning department first.

Background information: HK Ocean Park is now undergoing HK$ 5.5 billion redevelopment. A separate development plan to build 3 hotels (including a 5-star/6-star spa hotel, 4-star Ocean Park hotel and a Fisherman's Wharf hotel at the proposed new Fisherman's Wharf at Aberdeen). There will be around 10 more new hotels being built in the Ocean Park/Aberdeen Area.

Well this could initially be good for HKDL...visiting tourists even if they don't spend their whole time at HKDL could visit the WHarf and Ocean Park but stay at HKDL's hotels. However if all these other hotels get built this could be bad as the reverse could happen people could stay at Ocean Park's hotels and just visit HKDL.

Don't really think this will have a big effect. Their are already many great hotels in HK that existed before the park was built that are all easily connected to the park via MTR. You can get from the Peninsula or the Oriental...both 5 star hotels...to the park in about a half an hour. A few more hotels provides a few more options for tourists, but does not drastically change the current situation...

Well, this obviously won't effect my stay later this year, but it sounds like a generally positive thing to me.

At the moment, we plan to stay in Kowloon for several days, then spend the balance of the trip (and additional 2-3 night) in one of the Disneyland Hotels (probably Hollywood). We will more than likely take a tour of HK Island while staying there. However, the additional of another MTR connection will certainly make the decision of where to stay in order to get the "best of both (or three) worlds" much easier for tourists down the line.

When I last went to Hong Kong, admittedly back in late 1980s, Ocean Park WAS the big thing (and some kind of Space Museum if I recall correctly).

At any rate, this will definitely prove better for the consumer, but as has been said, may draw long term dollars away from Disney. After all, filling the hotels - which was not originally the Disney business - has now become a major source of income. Perhaps Disney will have to introduce some 'cheaper' hotel choices in and around HK Disneyland to entice crowds to stay there, rather than Ocean Park or another island.
