Beijing plans for a Disney Park by 2010

According to SCMP (South China Morning Post) in Hong Kong:

Beijing has unveiled an ambitious plan to build a Disney theme park by 2010, in a move that could see the capital leapfrog Shanghai in the race to become the first mainland city to compete with Hong Kong Disneyland.

News update:

Disney denies theme park plan at Beijing.....

HONG KONG - The Walt Disney Co. denied a news report Tuesday that said Beijing hopes to build a Disney theme park by 2010.
"Media reports that claim Disney is building a park in Beijing are inaccurate and not based on fact. Disney has no plans to build a park in Beijing at this time," Disney said in a statement.
The South China Morning Post, an English-language daily in Hong Kong, reported Tuesday that the Beijing city government unveiled a plan to create the second Disney theme park in China in its development road map - a move that could pose competition to the recently opened Hong Kong Disneyland.
The report said the city's development and reform commission proposed the theme park be built in Beijing's National New Media Base in the city's southern Daxing district.
Disney spokeswoman Alannah Goss said the company is still talking to Shanghai authorities about building a Disney theme park in the financial hub, but no agreement has been reached.
Hong Kong opened its Disney theme park in September and has counted on mainland Chinese tourists as a major source of visitors for the park.
Hong Kong Disneyland is a joint venture between The Walt Disney Co. and the local government, which shouldered the bulk of the park's construction fees.

That would be three for Asia. C'mon Disney, build one in Canada! We have a lack of theme parks up here!

Or finishing Hong Kong at least, and work on the existing ones around the world. It's like they built it in a hurry and then all of a sudden pack up and move at few hours (I suppose) north. They would be too close together, I think and since a large amount of people are coming to Hong Kong from mainland China for Disneyland, wouldn't the Disneyland in Hong Kong lose a lot of business

I think the world has enough Disney parks.... pretty soon it is going to be like Six Flags with one in every state, It is not much of a tourist attraction to the place that started all Disney parks if they keep building more of them...

yes you are right...enough is enough!!!

on the other hand, China is the most populated country in the world, it is quite likely a 2nd Disney Resort in China(Shanghai for the 1st mainland resort)will be built after 2010.(I personally don't see it happen b4 2010).

Look at Tokyo Disney Resort, over 90% of the guests are local japanese. China is big enough to sustain 2 Disney Resorts (at least some years down the road).

Re: Beijing plans for a Disney Park by 2010

Distance from Beijing to HK: 1200 miles
Distance from Shanghai to HK: 766 miles
Distance from Anaheim to Orlando: 2100 miles

Population
China: 1.3 billion
US: 295 million (or 0.2 billion)

I would hazard to guess that Guangzhou (region around HK), Beijing and Shanghai
areas all have 50 million (or more) people w/in 100 miles radius.

Just by the metropolitan areas: (http://www.citypopulation.de/World.html)

Shanghai: 17.9 million
Beijing: 11.95 million
HK: 7.35 million

Now back to the topic at hand. Is there population to justify this? yes. Should Disney do this? Not now in my opinion, they should spread these projects out so that they don't have to hire/train/fire a huge numbers of Imagineers, but provide enough work over the long haul. IMHO, although the quality of HKDL seems to be
pretty good, the quantity isn't there yet. (As compared to DCA where it seemed to have been the reverse initially).

Re: Beijing plans for a Disney Park by 2010

Population :

Hong Kong : 6.8 million
Shenzhen : more than 10 million (with a high percentage of transient population)

Shenzhen and Hong Kong are neighboring cities, their total population about 17 million.

Guangdong province : 86 million (or more)

so HK/Shenzhen is comparable in the size of population with Shanghai and Beijing.

1/2 of the world's population is within 5 hour by flight from HK International Airport.

9 cities of Guangdong province together with Hong Kong and Macau(also called "9+2")have formed the Greater Pearl River Delta Economic Region.

Hong Kong and Shenzhen government have put a lot of effort in building infrastructure for the facilitation of trade and tourism. e.g. the construction of the Mega Bridge (west corridor) between Shenzhen and Hong kong. when the west corridor opens at the end of this year or early next year, it will only take 10-15 mins to travel from Shenzhen border to Hong Kong border by car/bus.
