Sands China-DreamWorks agreement: Shrek, Kung Fu Panda and more coming to Cotai

I am not very sure where to post this, but here seems most appropriate.

Sands China-DreamWorks agreement: Shrek, Kung Fu Panda and more coming to Cotai

Macau's Cotai Strip Resorts are welcoming some new non-gaming elements this summer. The world-famous cartoon studio DreamWorks Animation has reached a licensing agreement with Sands China to bring its cast of animated characters to Sands Cotai Central.

From July 1st, the resorts will present a series of performances, parades, dining experiences, meet-and-greets and photo shoots highlighting characters such as Po from Kung Fu Panda; Shrek, Fiona and Puss in Boots from Shrek; Alex the Lion, King Julien and the Penguins from Madagascar and Toothless and Hiccup from How to Train Your Dragon.

According to the licensing deal, events, shows and offers such as room packages will be available throughout Cotai Strip Resorts, being the Conrad, Sheraton and Holiday Inn on the properties of Sands Cotai Central, as well as the Venetian Macau.

In addition, it was disclosed that there will be a DreamWorks-themed Ice World and a 3D light and sound show towards the end of this year.

During question time a representative from Sands China said the project is the first phase of the alliance and they had “options” to expand in the future.

Yoshi Maruyama, the Global Head of Location-Based Entertainment for DreamWorks Animation revealed that this is a “long-term” partnership and there is no limit on which characters DreamWorks could bring to Cotai as their relationship grows.

Interesting - developments like this can only strengthen international tourism to the Hong Kong maccau region but I wonder if it will have an effect locally. Will people forgo Disney to see Kung fu panda in Maccau?

No but Macau Katzenbergland would be a rival to Hong Kong Disneyland.

It really depends on how far they go with this. Sands China said character meets and greets are just phase one. They might end up building a DreamWorks casino resort with a mini-theme park?

But this competition is not going to go unnoticed at Disney and HK govt and might just spur them on to build more attractions thick and fast.

MACAU DAILY TIMES - Edward Tracy on Sandsā€™ strategy for non-gaming entertainment: The shows will go on

We are currently developing something new for kids on the third floor of Sands Cotai Central which I think will be very exciting. I can’t say too much until we are ready, but let’s just say it will be technology-forward and a lot of fun. Even the Kids Cavern, the kids’ clothing store developed with New Yaohan, has been very popular.
Dreamworks adds to a portfolio of entertainment offerings that we think are unmatched. We have a few years ahead of us while we continue to build our footprint here, and we have an ongoing job to get marketing traction for our products. To do that, we have to continue to offer more of what the customers are looking for.
I believe they are building an indoor mini theme park for kids....time will tell

It's staring to seem like every Tom, Dick and Harry can license some assortment of Dreamworks Animation characters for an entertainment venue.

The lack of exclusivity of the Dreamworks characters dilutes the brand. I hope Dreamworks is carefully monitoring the results.

Didn't Vegas once try and market itself as a Family Destination?

I can see why DreamWorks would want to make a move in Macau. Its a step into China. But it would make much more sense to see them try and arrange a deal with Ocean Park in Hong Kong.

The Sands agreement sounds more lucrative and they are much more profitable.
