    "Orlando Of China" Project or Orlando Project of China, Phase 1 to be completed soon!

    I have been talking about the theme park/entertainment/tourism hub being created in Pearl River Delta...now I am reporting that this project is being referred as "Orlando of China" or Orlando Project and phase 1 of this ambitious project is going to be completed soon.

    where is it located? It is located at the Island of Hengqin, right beside the city of Macau SAR, and within 1 hour driving radius of Hong Kong SAR (when the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Mega Bridge is completed by 2016).

    The highlights of the project:

    the worlds tallest Ferris wheel and is designed for 30 million visitors a year.

    On five square kilometers, it is building Asias biggest holiday centre, with a convention centre, hotels, 18-hole golf course, yachting centre and entertainment. It will provide 20,000 jobs directly and 100,000 indirectly and aims to bring 50 billion yuan in income a year to the island.
    by 2020, when its population will reach 280,000, up from 5,000 now.
    Orlando, in central Florida, is the model for the Hengqin development. The city has turned sugar cane fields and citrus plantations into one of the most visited cities in the United States. This is because of Universal Orlando Resort, SeaWorld Orlando and Walt Disney World, which is 34 kilometres to the south. In addition, it hosts the second largest convention complex in the country.

    Chimelong wants to follow the example of Orlando. It has hired major U.S. design firms PGAV and WATG for two major parts of the project, the Ocean World and the Ocean Hotel. Based in Honolulu, Hawaii, WATG has designed hotels and resorts in more than 100 countries across the world.

    Last December (2010) marked the start of the first phase of the project, involving investment of 10 billion yuan, on a land area of 1.43 million square metres and a built-up area of 1.2 million. It will include the Ocean Theme Park, International Ocean World and the Chimelong Dolphin Hotel, with 1,888 rooms, the largest environmental hotel in China. It will take ideas from the Venetian hotels in Macao and Las Vegas, with rooms, restaurants and retail space built around water.
    The first phase will also include a 210-metre-high ferris wheel, the tallest in the world, a two-kilometre cable car and a marine museum. This phase is due to open in 2012, with an annual design capacity of 30 million visitors. PGAB has overall design responsibility for this first phase. For the financing, Chimelong has borrowed five billion yuan from a consortium of seven banks led by Industrial and Commercial Bank of China and, in addition, is using its own funds.

    Before construction began, the builders had to remove 1,000 mu (67 hectares) of oyster farms and dump 850,000 cubic metres of earth into the sea to reclaim land.

    When it is finally completed, the project will include eight theme parks, including animal kingdom, science world, world flower park, bird world, beach sand park. There will be an 18-hole golf course, yachting centre and other sports facilities, international ocean theatre and international convention centre.

    i don't think there is a negative impact on HKDL or HK ocean Park, rather a positive impact, by attracting more tourists to Hong Kong and Macau as well as the Pearl River Delta Region.

    there are various local newspapers reporting that the opening date for Phase 1 of this Orlando Project has been pushed back to end of this year or sometime in 2014.

    Macau round up: Hengqin theme park update and new highway

    MAY 17 2012

    Yesterday, the hotel at the under-construction theme park in Hengqin was topped off. The 1,888-room hotel is located in Fuxiang Bay on East Hengqin and will be one of the largest hotels in mainland China with a total construction area of 300,000 square meters. The hotel is part of the RMB 10 billion (USD 1.56 billion) Phase I construction of the Chime-Long International Ocean Resort, which also includes “Ocean Kingdom,” the first of several planned theme parks on Hengqin. Ocean Kingdom is anticipated to include the world’s largest aquarium, and is expected to be operational by the end of this year, although we wouldn’t be surprised if the opening was pushed into 2013. Future phases of the project will be located at the adjacent Hengqin Mountain and Dolphin Bay. These future phases are planned to include up to 9 additional theme parks, 12 luxury hotels, 3 golf courses, 2 international yacht clubs, several shopping malls and convention centers.

    A hard sell when Disneyland is an hour away and the casinos are the main attraction at Macau. It needs to offer something new and different. It doesn't sound like it offers amusement parks different than what Hong Kong already has.

    A Chinese Orlando with elements of Vegas. Wow, this sounds like we've achieved the zenith of planned development.

    The park looks so much like a Disneyland clone, but taking elements from Sea World and IOA. The wide spaces look nice, but unclear what entertainment people are supposed to get from it.

    HKDL might really want to consider designing that second gate and DownDisney pretty soon. The competition is really getting fierce. Look at what's supposed to open for the first phase, that looks like more than what HKDL has to offer right now even after that 4-year expansion.

    HKDL is pretty small which they are fixing but even so may become an error. They at least have Shanghai on it's way. But that second gate for HKDL might be getting pushed up because of plans like this.

    Pushing it up may cause a lack in quality of the proposed second gate, but they should at least build things that keep guest on property even without the park. Their DTD needs to be constructed and feature more than just shopping and dining. Maybe a bowling alley and ice skating rink as well? Then one new, large, Pixar-themed hotel should be completed and have a large water park - not pool, water park that is accessible to that hotel's guest as well as the other resort guest. That should be something before to help the resort settle before rushing a second park

    The target opening date for ChimelongHengqin Bay Hotel and Chimelong Ocean Kingdom is the Month of November 2013. they are hiring now.

    official website : 横琴湾…’—

    ChimelongHengqin Bay Hotel, the largest ocean ecological theme hotel in China, was built with the cooperation of the world's
    leading architects, interior designers, and landscape designers. The hotel is located in Hengqin Island's Chimelong Internation
    al Ocean Tourist Resort. With a total construction area of 300,000 square meters, this hotel will be opened by the end of 2013.

    ChimelongHengqin Bay Hotel features 1,888 spacious accommodations and offers a wide range of dining facilities, which
    includes Chinese, Western, Japanese, and Asian cuisines. The luxurious conference venues offered by the hotel includes two
    ballrooms that are 3,000 sqm and 1,300 sqm, along with 26 equipped meeting rooms. Other hotel facilities include Executive
    Club Lounge, Spa and Recreation Center,outdoor water park,theme souvenirs shops,and an international exquisite gifts outlet.
    In addition, between the hotel and the Chimelong Ocean Kingdom, there is a one kilometer long Grand Canal with amazing
    scenery which guests can enjoy by riding the hotel’’s water taxi.

    and according to MingPao News, their target annual attendance is 20 million, which is 3x that of HK Ocean Park. In term of the land they occupy, it is bigger than HKDL resort, HKOP and Panyu Chimelong resort combined!

    HKDL needs a DisneySEA and nothing else. It could be inpired by the Tokyo park but new in most senses. It will be hard for Disney in Hong Kong if they open another WDS or Hollywood inspired park. With a halfgood Disneyland they need a second gate that kills competition.

    These plans we see here will offer aaalot hard to beat competition for Disney.

    Re: "Orlando Of China" Project or Orlando Project of China, Phase 1 to be completed s

    HKDL needs a second gate that is well imagineered and unique. Not a clone from another park. It is a tourism project after all. It should be built with attracting the whole world's tourists in mind and we want Japanese tourists and all the tourists who have been to DisneySea, too.

    Anyway I am 100% sure HK govt will vote down the DisneySea idea if it was ever tabled. They would say it is not "unique". Thank God.

    I just wish WDI would consider the concept of DisneySky, with the following rides:

    Soarining over the world;
    Peter Pan's Flight;
    The Magic Carpets of Aladdin;
    Tower of Terror with a new theme;
    Up (dark ride, maybe something like IASW);
    Star Wars Land;
    Stormrider;
    Test track with an element of accelerating up towards the sky, maybe using a Marvel character or the Incredibles;
    Minnie's Fly Girls Charter Airline;
    Goofy's Barnstormer;
    Mary Poppins show;
    Jumpin Jellyfish or Toy Soldier parachute drop re-themed;
    Mission: SPACE... and so on.

    Even though the rides are technologically clones from other parks, at least my concept is original and I am open to re-themeing the rides to suit HK's needs.
