Headed to Hong Kong this September! Need help.

    Hi Folks.

My wife and I booked a trip to Asia this September, which includes both Hong Kong and Tokyo. Naturally, we'll be headed to the respective Disney Parks.

After the excitement of booking the plane ticket, now comes the grunt-work of planning everything else. I have some questions and would appreciate any input:

    1) What's a recommended hotel? We are staying in for 4 nights in early sept, and we'd like to stay somewhere that is accessible to HKDL and the Hong Kong proper.

    3) We are seasoned Disneyland AP holders, so what are the rides in HK Disneyland that I cannot miss? What are the ones that I can skip (primarily because they are almost similar to US DL). I want to try and experience everything, but I know it's not possible. Definitely want to try Mystic Manor!

    3) How are crowds and weather this time of year?

    4) Any recommendations on what to do in Hong Kong?

    5) Any other tidbits would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Re: Headed to Hong Kong this September! Need help.

Any hotel in Hong Kong Island central area and the central parts of Kowloon are good to stay at if you are going to HKDL. To get to the park from the city only takes 45-60 minutes depending on where you are. The best way to travel in Hong Kong is via the easy metro system. I always stay at Royal Plaza Hotel on Prince Edward street or Langham Place.
Here is what Langham Looks like... but I prefer Royal Plaza.

Check www.agoda.com for other and cheaper options.

One day is enough in HKDL if you arrive when the gates open.
Skip Pooh, Dumbo, Tea party and the Cinderella carousel. They are just the same and as lame as any other.

See the the peak Never mind the train that goes up there. Just take a taxi. Walk around the peak for a free view of the HK skyline. Try to time this just as the sun sets. The best views are NOT from observatory but rather from the back of the peak on the small road that leads around the mountain. Here is what the path looks like, but the views you have to find your self

Just so that you know you are on the wright way.

Go to the markets in Kowloon, see the buddha and... just walk around. I love just being there.

Re: Headed to Hong Kong this September! Need help.

    1) Agree with above as I to like to stay at the Royal Plaza Hotel.

    2) I've sorted out the attractions below:

    Must See:
    - Mystic Manor
    - Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars
    - RC Racer
    - Jungle River Cruise (for last scene)
    - Festival of the Lion King
    - The Golden Mickeys
    - Mickeys Philharmagic
    - It's a small world

    If you have time:
    - Toy Soldier Parachute Drop
    - HKDL railroad
    - Space Mountain (although it is almost exactly like the disneyland version)
    - The Many adventures if Winnie the Pooh ( more similar to WDW than DL)

    Skip:
    - Every other Tomorrowland ride
    - the spinners of Fantasyland
    - Tarzans Treehouse
    - Slinky Dog Spin
    - Animation Academy

I recommend you see the parade and fireworks. This is all compared to DL only, which is why Philharmagic is in the must-see.

    3) Crowds should be relatively light since HK just started school. Weather should still be hot and humid since summer just passed.

    4) See Ngong Ping, Peak, and Ocean Park. Also see Hong Kong museums and explore the malls.

    5) If you plan on using the MTR a lot and on most days of your trip, get an octopus card. Trains are less expensive compared to taxis and busses.
    Disney Trips:
    Disneyland Resort: Dec 2013
Tokyo Disney Resort: April 2013, April 2014
    Hong Kong Disneyland Resort: Oct-Nov 2006, March 2007, April 2008, April 2009, March 2010, Oct 2011, May 2012, Oct-Nov 2012, May 2013...
    Favorite Rides:
    1) Mystic Manor(HKDL)
    2) Tower of Terror (TDS)
    3) Soarin Over California (DCA)
    4) Splash Mountain (TDL)
    5) Haunted Mansion (TDL, DL)

Re: Headed to Hong Kong this September! Need help.

    Must See: (Day Time)

    Mystic Manor (no FP)
(If the queue is long at Mystic Manor, just enjoy the "public" announcement in the indoor waiting area. Loads of little magic fun!)

    (Walking Through) Grizzly Gulch
(Best time to visit: Sunset with clear sky)

Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars (No FP)

    (Walking through) Toy Story Land

Festival of Lion King (Live Show) (No FP)

Jungle River Cruise (No FP) (with English "touring service")

    Flights of Fantasy Parade

The Golden Mickeys (Live Show) (No FP)

    Must See: (Night Time)

    Toy Story Land night view

    Mystic Point/Mystic Manor night view

    Big Grizzly Mountain night view

Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars
(YES!!! VISIT AGAIN AT NIGHT TIME!!! IT'S GONNA BE A TOTALLY MIND-BLOWING EXPERIENCE!!)

    Tarzan's Treehouse
(For a better night view of Hong Kong Disneyland, you could spot It's A Small World from there.)

Disney in the Star Firework Spectacular
(Best view: In front of Sleeping Beauty's Castle (Strongly suggested for 1st-timer))
(If you have watched it before, I'd suggest to watch it from Fantasyland (right at the entrance of Mickey's PilharMagic) would be breath-taking as well)

    Suggestion for Dining:

Plaza Inn, Main Street U.S.A. (Mulan themed Cantonese Restaurant with good quality food, but quiet expensive) (Table Service)

The Explorer's Club Restaurant, Mystic Point (Counter Service) (Newly Opened with S.E.A. themed environment)

Royal Banquet Hall, Fantasyland (Counter Service)

    P.S.
Halloween seasonal event usually holds from mid-Sept to 31 Oct. If you are going to visit HKDL during that period, Haunted houses and the Glow in the Dark Halloween Parade (The Nightmare Before Christmas themed, which will be replaced by a night parade soon) are strongly recommended to visit as well.

    Thanks everyone for their input.

I've booked the Fleming Hotel for my stay in Wan Chai. Got a crazy deal.

Now thats out of the way, any recommendations for transportation from Wan Chai to HKDL?

This one is easy, MTR. Wan Chai to Central, then walk to Hong Kong Station for the train to Sunny Bay. From Sunny Bay cross the platform for the Disney Line.

Thanks. Do you know how long that would take, and how much?

    MTR website:

    http://www.mtr.com.hk

They are going to raise prices quite soon, so the price on the website should only serve as a guide.

Get an Octopus card when you arrive or you can buy the MTR Disney tourist ticket. Between now and 10 October the Special Disney edition MTR ticket is available:

    http://mtr.com.hk/eng/whatsnew/hkdl.html

Size: 116.3 KB

$55 (Mickey) free use of MTR all day for 1 day.
$85 (Minnie) free use of MTR all day for 1 day plus cross-border journeys.
$120 (Donald) free use of MTR all day for 2 days plus cross-border journeys.

    Thanks!

What is considered "Cross-Border" Journey? Is that Mainland?

I had to switch hotels from Wan Chai to Eaton. So now I'll be going from MTR Jordan station.

Yes, it is mainland China. You will only need the $55 Mickey ticket if you are going from Jordan. Change at Lai King for the Tung Chung Line and then change at Sunny Bay for the Disney Line. Just walk across the platform at both stations.

Re: Headed to Hong Kong this September! Need help.

This is all great info, thanks! I will be visiting the park the last Sunday of this month. Anyone know what kind of crowds I can expect in terms of wait times?

Also wondering about the hotel situation. I'll be in downtown Hong Kong Friday night. Sightseeing the city on Saturday, Disneyland Sunday, fly home Monday. Currently staying in downtown HK on Friday night. Disneyland hotels are booked solid for Saturday but sort of want to stay somewhere nearby the parks on Saturday night and then near the airport on Sunday. However, looks like pretty limited options near the park. Any suggestions?

Novotel Citygate at Tung Chung. It is just one stop away from Sunny Bay and very close to airport.

Marriott SkyCity. It is just across the road from AsiaWorld Expo and one stop away from airport (Airport Express). But you will need to travel to Tsing Yi by Airport Express then change train (go back the way you came, using the Tung Chung Line) to Sunny Bay and then change again for Disney line.

Regal Airport Hotel. Right next door to airport, but in terms of travel to the parks you have to travel same way as above.

Auberge Discovery Bay. It is new and actually very near Disneyland geographically, you can probably see some fireworks if you have a seaview room, but you will have to first travel to Sunny Bay by bus (DB03R or DB03P) and then take the Disney Line. (If they had a boat service you could reach there in 15 minutes.) On their website they said they have a bus service to Disneyland, but not sure how much.

    I'm back with another question!

Anyone familiar with the Noah's Ark hotel? Right now I'm booked at the Eaton Hong Kong, but the Noah's Ark looks interesting, and a little cheaper. I'm just wondering if it's still easier to travel to disney and downtown hong kong from there.

Travel to Disney from Noah's Ark is not as straight forward as it seems. You must first take their franchised bus to Tsing Yi. From Tsing Yi take MTR to Sunny Bay and then change to Disney Line to Disney. It will be more expensive than travelling from Jordan, where Eaton is.

Jordan offers a lot more nightlife then Noah's Ark, too. By that I just mean shops will be open and if you go around to the Yaumati multi-storey car park area, you will see people singing Cantonese opera and Chinese fortune tellers... etc.
