Re: New Announcement expected today: Marvel attraction...Iron man ?

This might just be the most boring ride Disney's ever done. Generic franchise. Dull name. Uninteresting 80's ride system. Shopping mall aesthetics. Sorry Hong Kong Disneyland. Looks like Mystic Manor and Grizzly Gulch were all the interesting rides you'll get.

Re: New Announcement expected today: Marvel attraction...Iron man ?

I am not sure how people are already making this a clone of Star Tours??? The press release I read is pretty vague. The vehicles could be smaller for all we know. They could be more like Transformers or maybe they are trackless again I am guessing since they just announced it. I feel it's a bit early to criticize this attraction already IMO. I think given it's in a offshore park there could be a lot done with this and it could very well be awesome. I actually will look forward to it.

Re: New Announcement expected today: Marvel attraction...Iron man ?

It's going in the slot originally intended for Star Wars and the concept art pretty clearly shows re-skinned Star Speeders. Look at the expansion pad, there's no room for anything bigger than Star Tours, which is a pretty compact ride. It's pretty obvious that the ride system is just a generic sim, not even an upgraded sim like Stormrider. Given that I don't enjoy Star Tours despite the fact it's based on a franchise I somewhat enjoy, I don't find a simulator based on a weaker IP even remotely interesting.

I can already guess the story:

You're touring Stark Industries. You eventually come to a demo in which you take the reskinned star speeders for a test drive... It will probably be called something like the Stark Speeder 3000. All is going well as Iron Man shows you around the city when suddenly something goes horribly wrong and generic bad guy 7 tries to kill you. You get bumped around through some CGI city streets and fight scenes for a few minutes and then you're dumped into a gift shop.

There's very little to look forward too.

Even if its a retheme of Star Tours, I've got no issue with it.

Besides if they were cloning Star Tours (or STII) people would still be bemoaning this addition to HKDL as nothing more than yet another of the cloning of attractions.

Also I think we need a bit more information about it, or better yet see the finished attraction to really judge it.

The fact that they are making sure that Hong Kong is not going to be ignored post-Shanghai is very encouraging.

Why would there even care? This is going into a park thousands of miles away from Islands of Adventure. And I think people are greatly missing the point here. Anyone who's visited Hong Kong Disneyland or has basic knowledge how Guests enjoy the park will know that if it uses the 3D projection systems that are done for Star Tours then this attraction will blow people away. Mickey's Philharmagic is very popular in Hong Kong because of its 3D technology. I just hope it's going to be live action vs animation.

Seriously. People on here are being way too critical, way too early. Give it a chance! Let Disney show us more of it before you cast such extreme judgment on the attraction.

Pretty much this... And not to mention they could possibly tweak the ride system a lot for a brand new attraction.

It is costing $100 million after all - I seriously doubt a re-themed clone of Star Tours would cost that much.

I don't get what some are saying here - this is a GOOD addition. It's better than a clone of an old and tried ride - it's something new in a park that desperately needs its "bragging rights" given the SHDL dilemma. And then of course - the Iron Man franchise is an instant hit in that part of the world. In this market Star Wars is nothing in comparison to Marvel characters (as sad and tragic it may sound to me personally) so I really don't see a shred of trouble coming out of this very good investment. When I was in school in HK, most people knew all about Hobbits and Harry but had never seen a Star Wars movie - clearly WDI did their research and ditched Star Wars (for now - let's see what the new trilogy brings).

ORDDU: This witch is surprised that an attraction such as this would take until late 2016 to open. How soon does construction begin?

I'm sure the ride will be fine, maybe not mind blowing like Hunny hunt but a solid ride for a park that's short on them.

As this park has no star tours I have no problem if the ride is based on the same tec, in fact I think using the same tec for different rides is a great idea as it gives us an excuse to travel to each resort and experience everything.

saying that I think soarin could have been better for an iron man ride but I guess we'll have to see how things turn out before we cast our judgements

I don't think its necessarily the construction that's taking that long intentionally. I think they're staggering it so HK can have something over Shanghai rather than being the bridesmaid in the latter's opening year.

That's quite a novel idea. I've never ridden Soarin' so I can't imagine how it'd work, but it'd be quite unique that's for sure.

$100 million for a mini land, including a ride, a restaurant, and a shop doesn't go very far today with Disney. Remember that $100 million bought the underwhelming Little Mermaid D ticket at DCA. $100 million for an E-Ticket isn't very much now a days by Disney's standards.

For reference, $452 million bought HKDL Grizzly Gulch, Mystic Point, and 3 flat rides, along with a couple restaurants. $100 million isn't going to buy anything more than a re-themed Star Tours clone. Manage your expectations.

Hmmm... now that I've thought about it more, perhaps if it had multiple smaller vehicles that would provide a more intimate experience, particularly with JARVIS, would be quite neat.

That and if Stark Industries could provide a more story-driven Innoventions, I might get pretty excited for it.

$100 Million Sounds about right. I don't think making the comparison to what we know Star Tours to be is fair. The complex that houses Iron Man, a dining location and gift shop will be much, much larger than Star Tours here in the states. Just look at the concept art. Obviously it's not going to be a 1:1 replica. It will be very unique.

About the ride itself, the Disney-nerd fanboy inside of me was hoping for more than just a Star Wars clone. But the realistic theme park enthusiast sees why they did what they did, and that it is in fact a very smart move on their behalf. This ride will be HUGE in China.

I echo your statements. basically I just want something I can't go on anywhere else when i visit other Disney parks. Indy and Dinosaur are the Same attraction but boy does one suck!!!! I expect the show that comes along with this Iron Man attraction to be spectacular with lots of lights and excitement given it's in HK where they light up the Harbor with a light show why wouldn't Disney do something like this rather than put just the exact footprint of Star Tours in. They have plenty of land to make this special.
