China President Hu JinTao will officiate at the opening ceremony of Western Corridor

China President Hu JinTao will arrive Hong Kong on 29th June 2007 for the upcoming celebration and ceremony at HKSAR 10th Anniversary on 1st July 2007.

During his visit, he will officiate at the opening ceremony of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Western Corridor.

Western Corridor to open on July 1

The Shenzhen Bay Port and the Shenzhen Bay Bridge - also known as the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Western Corridor - will commence operation on July 1.

The port will be officially opened after a ceremony at noon on July 1, and passenger and cargo clearance facilities will be opened for public use from 6pm.

It will initially run for 17.5 hours a day, from 6.30am to midnight. Hong Kong and Shenzhen sides will assess when to provide a 24-hour service after the port has been in operation for some time.

To allow sufficient time for the clearance of passengers and vehicles before the closure of the Shenzhen Bay Port at midnight, the Shenzhen Bay Bridge will be closed to northbound traffic at 11.30pm every night, including July 1.

-----------------------

The 5.5-kilometre-long Shenzhen Bay Bridge is the fourth vehicular boundary crossing between Hong Kong and Shenzhen. It links the new control point at the Shenzhen Bay Port in Shekou with Ngau Hom Shek in the northwest New Territories.

It is expected that two-way daily traffic and passenger flows will be 29,800 vehicles and 30,800 passengers during the initial opening period. The anticipated traffic and passenger flows will increase to about 60,300 vehicles and 61,300 passengers each day in 2016.

This will greatly enhance the flow of goods and travellers between Mainland China and Hong Kong.

Shenzhen-Hong Kong West Corridor opens

The 5.5 kilometer Corridor is now operational. This, as a gift for the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China. Chinese President, Hu Jintao, attended the opening ceremony and cut the ribbon.

This five and a half kilometers route has brought Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland closer. The Hong Kong section links up the northern end of Deep Bay Link at Ngau Hom Shek, with the mainland section of the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Western Corridor. The Shenzhen-Hong Kong Corridor is a 3-lane highway. The Western Corridor is the fourth vehicular crossing between the Hong Kong SAR and Shenzhen. The much-needed addition, will help relieve heavy traffic at the other crossings.

Authorities expect the new route will see at least 10 percent, of the total cross-border traffic flow. The new Hong Kong airport, Disneyland and Hong Kong Island, are just half an hour away. The Corridor is expected to give trade a boost. It will help facilitate economic development particularly in areas of finance, logistics and tourism. And strengthen the position of Hong Kong as the hub of the Pearl River Delta area.

The Hong Kong SAR government estimates the Western Corridor will bring in about 17.5 billion Hong Kong dollars, or about two billion US dollars, by 2020.
