    HKDL advice needed please!

    Hi all!

I know this is broad, but we are complete newbies headed to Hong Kong Disneyland in December, and I would love any tips you could give. We are staying at the Hollywood Hotel for five nights.

    Thanks for your input!

For starters, keep your expectations very low. You will be disappointed otherwise if you don't, especially since you have visited the Tokyo Disney Resort. Hong Kong Disneyland is very short on attractions, so make sure you see all the shows and parades as well. On a normal day, you can see the whole park in just a few hours. Since you are visiting in December, the park might be slightly more crowded depending on which week you are visiting. Still, you will spend a lot of time just soaking in atmosphere.

When you are bored of the park, take the time to explore your hotel. From the pictures I've seen, the Hollywood Hotel looks like very similar to the Disney Ambassador Hotel at the Tokyo Disney Resort. While the Ambassador Hotel feels more elegant and classy, the Hollywood Hotel focuses more on whimsy and fun.

Take the time to explore the Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel also, as it has a very different atmosphere than the Hollywood Hotel. It is very pretty, being Victorian themed and all. Overall, it's worth checking out (even for a little while) if you have time.

Secondly, take advantage of the 2 for 1 deal going on at the 2 Disney hotels. If you purchase a park ticket at the front desk of your hotel, you will be given an additional day for no extra price.

    Yay - Howdy Mega!

Thanks TDR_Fan for the tips. We are aware of the "lack" of things to do, so to speak.

Visiting and exploring the hotels is a great idea. Are there character meals worth doing in the hotels? We definitely missed this opportunity at TDR. My boys saw Chef Mickey's at the Ambassador Hotel, and we had to tell them 'next time'. I just hadn't done my research.

We'll be there the week between Christmas and New Years. Will the crowds be horrible? Of course, they can't be much worse than what we experienced at TDR. After that, I can handle anything.

And we will definitely check on the ticket thing. I had seen something on that before.

    Thanks again!!!

No problem. There is a Chef Mickey at the Hollywood Hotel, but it is not a character buffet like the one at the Ambassador Hotel. The neighbouring Disneyland Hotel does have the Enchanted Garden Restaurant, which is a character buffet.

Given that you are staying five nights, you will have plenty of time to explore the Resort, the hotels and the city.

Definitely have a drink one night in the Studio Lounge in your hotel, which I can highly recommend, and enjoy the breakfast and dinner buffets at the Chef Mickey. Try and book for the character meals. Indeed, around Christmas booking is probably going to be essential (they will be putting on special meals for Christmas). This is from last year, but some of it might still apply:

The grounds of the hotel are worth an afternoon stroll, and there is a great view from the rear of the grounds, especially at night.

Wander up to Inspiration Lake for a paddle or walk around the place, that's always a nice diversion. We spent a pleasant afternoon there, and we were surprised that we enjoyed it so much. It wasn't something we'd normally do (of course, I was a great deal fitter on the last holiday than I had been on previous ones)!

Hong Kong is so geographically compact, that you can hop on a train and head into the city at any time. Definitely take the time to go to Kowloon and Hong Kong island, and merrily shop. Of course, being Christmas, that might get kind of full on too, but you simply have to do it. Perhaps even consider a day trip out to Ocean Park? Oh, and you'll be on Lantau Island, so don't forget to visit NP and the Big Buddha. As has been pointed out already, there are only so many things you can do in the park itself. Even us HKDL defenders will admit to that. However, don't get the impressed it is a "bad" park - it is still a first class Disney establishment...just smaller.

...and don't forget your Octopus card!

Also, because I never miss an opportunity for shameless self-promotion, we've set up a English-language fan site, HKDL Source (also linked in my signature). Some of your questions will hopefully be answered there as well.

I have nothing else to add to this, except for the fact that five nights at the HKDL resort may be a bit too long. Trust me on this... you can do the park in just one single day and still be able to repeat some attractions. But since you do have all of that time... then take the time to explore every squared inch of the park.. every shop, most restaurants, all ride, all shows and parades... I mean.. EVERYTHING! Then take another day to enjoy the Hotels.. I stayed at the Hollywood and you will not be disappointed. I *loved* that hotel. Similarly, the HKDL Hotel next door is worth exploring at ease. Furthermore, do take the shuttle and explore the Recreational Lake in the resort... maybe rent a pedal boat and enjoy a walk around the lake. It's very relaxing.
IMHO... 3 nights will be more than enough to do the resort, and I would then move to a hotel in the city to enjoy the rest of the vacation. Still, even at 5 nights, you will enjoy being there, as long as you don't mind commuting to/from HKDLR and the City for other activities of interest or sightseeing. But each one-way trip to the city or back to the Resort (from Disneyland Station to Central) will take you on average 35-45 mins, each way. Then another 10-20 mins or so, depending on wait times, to get from the MTR station to your HKDL hotel via the resort shuttle bus.

Other than that... I sure hope you will enjoy your visit, especially since you will be there when the Xmas decor and shows will be on... like snow on Main Street... etc etc.

If you want a break from HKDL and the city itself, it might be nice to take a side trip. One of the things I wished I had time to do when I was recently in HK is visit some of the villages and more rural areas of Lantau Island, as well as some of the outlying islands -- Lamma, for example.

5 days is a bit excessive just to be in at HKDL. But here is what I would do: Day 1 at the park. Day 2 visit Ocean Park. , Day 3 visit Macau (For casinos check out Sands, Lisboa, Crowne, Fisherman Wharf if you are adventureous go up to Macau Tower and scale off the tower edges. Or try go-karting, its a much bigger track than the one in HKDL Autopia. Also the Venetian Macau is opening up later this month Aug. 28th, this might be well decide your trip date). Day 4-5 Visit more on Hong Kong and go on a shopping tour,Go visit the big budda on Lantau Island and Get off at the these MTR stations: Mong Kok (bird street, flower street, goldfish street),Yau Ma Tei (temple street at night after 7pm), Causeway Bay (Sogo and Times Square), Tsim Sha Tsui aka TST (Space Museum, Avenue of the Stars, Star Ferry (take it to Central, its a classic attraction itself and cheap too. Panoramic view of Victoria Harbor), Ocean Terminal-Harbor City (book a cruise ship, that might take a bit more time)), For more shopping places get off at Kowloon Tong (Festival Walk) and Tai Koo MTR tation (Tai Koo Shing)

There maybe more stuff I can add to do HK. But for now I think what I said now is plenty.

Another (probably stupid) question - is it feasible to think my kids could swim in December? Are the pools even open?

By the way, be sure to check out the Peninsula Hong Kong if you're ever in the city; it's supposed to be one of, if not the best, 5 star hotel in the world. Worth checking out if you have time, though it is in the Kowloon district and not on Hong Kong Island itself.

Definitely go into the city. I think your kids would really like the flower market, bird market and gold fish market. Maybe even the city view and wax museum at the Peak. The Big Buddha is wonderful and the kids will love racing up all those stairs. Macau I thought was boring unless you gambled heavily and liked being in a crowded smokey room. The town itself there was interesting to walk through. Disneyland will of course be fun, but you'll have your fill of it in two days/three days. But the city is so easy and quick to get to. Have a great time. I was just there Nov of last year and really enjoyed it.
