That Venetian grand opening must be a wake up call to HKDL and HK govt to start pumping more money into the park infrastructure. Given the grand scale of the casino, its directly competing with HKDL for the entertainment industry

One member of the HK Legislative Council : "We won't approve the funding"

"If the management at HKDL doesn't change the way it is operated (without disclosing information regarding the actual attendance etc), HK Government should not inject further capital to fund its expansion! They need to run HKDL with more transparency."

These political naysayers are trying to take down Disney, by not approving the park funding, they are aiding Macau to take the lion's share of the tourist revenue.

This is probably why government should have no part in business, their decisions are politically motivated to self interest.

ORDDU: Hmmmm......in that case, it's a wonder that this little park ever got built to begin with.

ORWEN: (sigh) It's like a soap opera, if you ask me. I mean, all this government drama without more attractions for yo mama!

Seriously, HKDL and HKOP are what we have to fight the Venetian.

If the HK govt cannot in the end invest in HKDL, then please sell its shares off to the private sector and let the market get on with it.

I am not sure the Venetian will steal much business from HK. For one.. Macau and their new mega casinos are geared towards a different crowd (gamblers, adult oriented stuff etc) while HKDL and OP are geared to families and the like. Much like Vegas versus Southern CA, these two cities enhance one another... and both profit from it. I can see Macau and HK in the same light. But then again... I am just offering an opinion oon how I see this situation.

From what I have seen it looks like HKDL needs a lot of money and fast. It is hard to call a resort Disney without POTC and the Haunted Mansion. I know DL opened without these, but they remain the ultimate Disney rides and DLP and TDL had versions of them on opening day.

    Too many Casino.....

Venetian Macau is just a first of a series of New Mega Casinos coming to Cotai Strip. Venetian Macau received over 100,000 visitors yesterday (Saturday). 100,000 visitors for a single day.

at least 2 dozen of New Casinos are coming to Macau. MGM Grand Macau opens around Nov 2007. Ponte16 opens end of 2007. Four Seasons Macau opens in 2Q 2008. Plus Sheraton, St. Regis, Shangri-La, Hard Rock Hotel, Playboy Mansion, Macao Studio City..........etc

The only competetion the Macau casinos will give will be to Vegas itself. If your a Asian Business Man why would you travel all the way to the states when you got the same mega casinos in your backyard.I don't see this hurting Hong Kong Disneyland or Ocean Park one bit.

In any case, I seriously do not think that HK should start thinking about allowing casinos. Macau allows legal prostitution, too, so if some company comes along and open the world's largest brothel there, are we to follow, too?

Personally, I think HK itself is the biggest theme park in the world. It is unique enough as it is and we should not fear Macau's competition.

But HKDL surely can do a lot better.

Whether or not Macau and its casinos will take tourist business away from HK, the scope of the Venetian does highlight the very puny scope of HKDL. They really didn't seem to be aiming to blow people away with what they were offering, rather there seems to have been an assumption that the Disneyland brand would work all on its own as a draw. They didn't even build a particularly impressive castle for the publicity shots.

The attention this new casino is getting right around the world should perhaps leave the HK government to ponder the scope of their own offerings even if the casino is not going to directly compete for tourists.

Especially in the context of today's competitive environment, It is very obvious that SIZE does matter!
