2nd Year Result released: HKDL suffers a major blow by HKOP

HKDL suffers a major blow by HKOP (Hong Kong Ocean Park). Recent attendance has been rising steadily at HKOP, roughly around 5 million.

IASW might not help that much. If they don't expand with more attractions, attendance might slide further down.

It is clear that the novelty factor has worn off.

I find it incredibly ironic that when Disneyland was in it's early years, it too had competition against an "Ocean Park". And now Hong Kong Disneyland as problems against an "Ocean Park". Ladies and Gentlemen, History does infact repeat itself.

Except, the original Disneyland added three major E-tickets within four years of opening. Which is exacly what HKDL should also be doing. But isn't.

Oh please, all I have to say about this is.... WHO CARES? Furthermore...Ocean Park is ghetto. I have been there and trust me... until they finish the ongoing improvements, HKDL will always be a better quality experience.

I could be wrong, but I think this news may make it politically more difficult for the government to approve significant future investment in the park as it is increasingly being portrayed as a failed venture. On top of a constant stream of news about falling attendance over the past year, this release may increase a perception that the government is throwing good money after bad. I also get the impression that Hong Kongers are rooting for Ocean Park anyway.

Hot from the press: Recent announcement from HK Government that "Green Light" has been given for the go ahead of MTR South (East) Island Line project. The whole project would cost somewhere between HK$7billion and HK$8 billion.

There would be a new MTR Station at Hong Kong Ocean Park along the proposed new MTR South (East) Island Line.

Clearly, Hong Kong Government is pushing ahead those Tourism projects around areas near Hong Kong Ocean Park.

Attendance at HKDL by local hong kongers fell from 42% in 2005/2006 down to 31% in 2006/2007.

Attendance at HKDL by mainland visitors went up from 34% in 2005/2006 to 39% in 2006/2007.

Attendance at HKDL by foreign visitors went up from 24% in 2005/2006 to 30% in 2006/2007.

it is not so accurate by just looking at the % figures. if you look at the actual attendance figures, they received 800,000 less local hong kongers during 2nd year.

attendance by mainland visitors actually went down by as much as 400,000 during 2nd year.

No further explanation is needed. Just look at Macau. they build Mega Complex, Mega Casino, Mega Shopping Centres to attract Mainland Chinese/Hong Kongers.

So either HKDL needs to start building quality attractions and expanding the park now or its going to play second to Ocean Park in the years to come.
