Hong Kong (AHN) - While a slight uptick in last-minute Christmas shopping provided a modest boost in Yuletide sales for the U.S. and U.K. retail industries, its Asian counterparts were enjoying a rapid rise in Christmas spending. Hong Kong residents and tourists, despite the lack of awareness what the December 25th Christian holiday really stands for, spent $25.6 million (200 million HK dollars) for their holiday shopping.

The amount represents a 16 percent jump in sales compared to 2006 levels. Similarly, an 11 percent increase is expected in the Special Administrative Region's number of shoppers or 9 million buyers.
Sale of souvenir items in Hong Kong Disneyland topped 900,000 items. The catering sector is enjoying a 20 to 30 percent boost in orders and profits.

Meanwhile, 2.7 million tourists decided to spend their Christmas in Hong Kong, up by 10 to 15 percent compared to last year, said Joseph Tung Yao-Chung, executive director of the Travel Industry Council of Hong Kong.
